Strengthening partnership with families and children.

Partnerships with children

Infants and children spend most of the time of their day in the early learning settings. It is

very important to have secure partnerships with the children as it is the base of their

development and learning (DET,2016). This resource is going to help children understand

diversity in the context.

After placing the resource in the classroom, I will have discussion about language, how can

we communicate, different ways of communicating, various languages and purpose of the

poster. This discussion is going to motivate children to communicate and engage in diverse

learning experience.

Influenced by Reggio Amelia approach, seeing child as competent, powerful and

knowledgeable will extend and deepen their understanding on diversity (Martalock,2012).

After discussion, extending experience by collaborating with children to bring one word from

home, it can be in, any language. This will encourage children to bring their home language

to the classroom and will also strengthen relationships with families.

This takes me back to the Gilliard and Moore (2007) research explaining teachers failing to

link school to home culture affects children sense of belonging and learning. This has

strengthened my belief on importance of partnerships in education settings. Which is further

supported by McCormilla (2012) children develop stronger friendships with teachers and in

the community if they have secure partnerships.

Partnerships with families

Families are the most crucial aspect in children’s life. They are the first care givers and

primary influence on their children’s learning (DET,2016). As an early childhood educator

my aim is to build respectful and engaging partnerships with the families. To extend on

existing partnerships and construct partnerships with the new families. I have made a

resource, a poster that displays ‘Welcome’ in various language.

This ‘Welcome’ poster is created to provide welcoming, safe and supportive environment to

all the families and especially families with diverse language background.

While developing this resource, I have drawn on Fairness Matrix by Hughes and Naughton

(2011). I have realized that parents with English as their second language might feel difficult

or not heard/seen in the early learning settings. For those families communicating and

expressing their knowledge is challenging. This directly impacts their communication with

the educators and make them silent in educator-parent relationship.

To remove communication barriers, this poster welcome’s families into diverse classroom.

That reflect back on EYLF (DET,2016) developing inclusive environment where families feel

encouraged provides greater consistency and complimentary for the children.

Also, this poster intends to enhance links between home and early learning settings. As I

have referred to Hughes and Naughton (2011) reforming approach, where an educator use

parents knowledge to complement their learning experiences. Using this approach to bring

children home language to the early learning setting. This collaboration with families will not

only extend partnerships with families but with children as well.
