Fluid Kinematics Worksheet 3: PART 1: Essay Instructions

Kinematics is the study of motion without consideration of forces or mass. Fluid kinematics involves studying how fluid particles flow and move through space and time. A stationary probe making Eulerian measurements of pressure and temperature over time at one location. A weather balloon transmitting weather data during its ascent is making Lagrangian measurements by following the balloon's trajectory through the atmosphere. Streamlines indicate the instantaneous path of fluid particles. Streaklines differ in that they show the path that a particle has traveled over time.

FLUID KINEMATICS
WORKSHEET 3
PART 1: Essay
Instructions:
1. Answer the following questions.

 What does the word kinematics mean? Explain what the study of fluid kinematics
involves.
 A stationary probe is placed in a fluid flow and
 measures pressure and temperature as functions of time at one location in the flow shown
in the figure. Is this a Lagrangian or an Eulerian measurement? Explain.

 A weather balloon is launched into the atmosphere by meteorologists. When the balloon
reaches an altitude where it is neutrally buoyant, it transmits information about weather
conditions to monitoring stations on the ground shown in the figure. Is this a Lagrangian
or an Eulerian measurement? Explain.

 What is the definition of a streamline? What do streamlines indicate?

 What is the definition of a streakline? How do streaklines differ from streamlines?

PART 2: Problem Solving
