Lawful Earning

Almighty Allah orders as O, believers! Eat our good things

provided to you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is He whom you
worship.
(Surah Al-Baqara Ayat: 172)

The Best Food

Hadrat Al-Maqdam narrated that: the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi

Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: "One who eats from the hard-earned
money of both hands meal is the best food”. Hadrat David (Salam Be
On Him) used to eat from the earnings of his manual labour."
(Volume 3, Book 34, Number 286, Sahih Bukhari)

Hadrat Abdullah bin Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that
Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “Almighty Allah
loves Momin (pious Muslim) who adopts permitted profession for
earning”.
(Al-Mojam Al-Kabir, H: 1320, Al-Jamia Al-Saghir, H: 1873, Al-Mojam Al-Aowsat, H: 9097,
Majama-Al-Zwaid, H: 6231)

Supplication Is Rejected If Nourishment Is Unlawful

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's

Messenger (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) as saying: “O
people! Allah is Pious He likes piety, Allah commanded the believers
as He commanded the Messengers by saying: "O Messengers, eat
of the good things, and do good deeds; verily I am aware of
what you do".

And further, He commanded us: “O those who believe eat of the

good things that We gave you".

He then mentioned a person who travels widely, with dusty

dishevelled hair. He raises his hands and supplicates. "O Lord, O

Lord," while his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes
are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful, how can then his
supplication be accepted”?
(Al-Baqara Ayat: 172, Al-Mu’minun Ayat: 51) (Book #005, Hadith #2214, Sahih Muslim)

Lawful Earning Is Better Than Begging

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: Allah's
Apostle (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: "One who earns
his livelihood by cutting and selling wood is better than begging, may
he be abused or refused."
(Volume 3, Book 34, Number 288, Sahih Bukhari)

Purest Earning

Hadrat Saeed bin Umair Ansari (Allah be pleased with him) narrated
that Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) was asked:
“Which is the purest profession”? He (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam) replied: “A person earned by his hand, and does every
authorized trade”. Another narration is: “Lawful profession”.
(Shaub-ul-Iman, H: 1225, 1226, Al-Mustadrik, V: 2, P: 101)

Earning Near The Resurrection Day

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: the
Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, "A time will
come when one will not care how he gains his money, legally or
illegally."
(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 34, Number 275)

Praying For Lawful Earning Is Obligatory

Hadrat Anas bin Maalik (Allah be pleased with him) states that:
Praying for lawful earning is obligatory for every Muslim.
(Al-Mojam Al-Aowsat, H: 6805)

594
FOLLOW EASY WAY OF LIFE

Hadrat Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) narrated that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “Seek livelihood from each
corner of the world. Imam Behqi termed it as the profession of
cultivation.
(Shaub-ul-Iman, H: 1233, Al-Mojam Al-Aowsat, H: 8093, Musnad Abu Yaala, H: 4384)

A Principle of Business

Hadrat Nafea stated that he used to proceed towards Syria and

Egypt for trading. Allah blessed me with subsistence in abundance.
Once I went to Iraq for business and lost even principal capital. I
reported the matter to Hadrat Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) who
said: O my son! Keep on trading. I (Allah be pleased with her) heard
from the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) saying:
“When a gate for livelihood is opened for you then be its incumbent”.
(H: 1243, Shaub-ul-Iman)

Body Nurtured Through Illegal Earning Will Enter Into Hell

Hadrat Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “The flesh nourished unlawful
earning will not enter into Paradise and flesh with unlawful means is
befitting for Hell.
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Sanis, Ref: Ahmed Darmi, Behqi Fi-
Shaub-ul-Iman)

Give Up Doubtful Thing (Deed)

Hadrat Hasan bin Ali (Allah be pleased with him) related that he
remembered a saying of Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam): “Avoid doubtful things and adapt truthfulness because
truth has contentment and a lie is doubtful”.
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Sanis, Ref: Ahmed, Tirmizi, Nisani, Darmi)

Pure Earning Results Into Pardon

595
EARN THROUGH LAWFUL MEANS

Hadrat Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) related that he heard
the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) saying that one is
tired by working with his own hands till evening, is forgiven.
(Al-Mojam Al-Aowsat, H: 6238, Majama-Al-Zwaid, V: 4, P: 63)

Perplexity For Livelihood Is An Expiation Of Sins

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: "There are some sins for
which Prayer, Fasting, Hajj and Umra are not penanced by the
Muslims", asked: O Messenger of Allah! Then what is penance for
these sins? He (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: "Worry
and perplexity for seeking".
(Al-Mojam Al-Aowsat H: 102)

Curse Upon Ten Personnel

Hadrat Anas (Allah be pleased with him) stated that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) cursed ten persons regarding wine
i.e; wine preparation, getting prepared, drinker, carrying it, for whom
carried, made to drink, its seller, its earning, its purchasers and
helpers for purchase.
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Sanis, Ref: Tirmizi, Ibn Maja)

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) stated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) forbade the sale of dog and
the income of singers.
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Sanis, Ref: Shara Un Nisa)

Hadrat Umar (Allah be pleased with him) Vomited On

Drinking Zakat Milk
Hadrat Zaid bin Aslam stated that Hadrat Umar (Allah be pleased
with him) drank milk and liked it. He (Allah be pleased with him)
asked the host, “Where did you get this milk”? He replied: “I was
passing by a watering point (Also mentioned its name) where zakat

camels were drinking water. The owners of the camels milked their
camels and gave them to me. I put it in a container. This is the same
milk”. Then Hadrat Umar (Allah be pleased with him) put his hand into
his mouth and vomited it.
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Salasat, Ref: Behqi Fi- Shaub-ul-Iman)

Prayer Wearing Unlawful Dress Is Not Granted

Said Hadrat Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him): If a person buys a
cloth of ten dirhams, inclusive of one illegal dirham, his prayer will not
be granted till he keeps on wearing. Then he (Allah be pleased with
him) put his two fingers in his both ears and said: “May these two
ears go deaf if I had not heard so from the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi
Wa’alihi Wa’sallam).
(Mishkat, Bab-Al-Kasab wa Talab-Al-Halal, Al-Fasal Al-Salasat, Ref: Behqi Fi- Shaub-ul-Iman)

Search For Lawful Earning On Way To Allah’s Cause

Hadrat Ayub (Allah be pleased with him) stated that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) and his Companions (Allah be
mercy on them) watched from a hillock that a Quraishi (person) was
heading towards them. Companions (Allah be mercy on them) said:
“How healthy is he! Would that he spend his strength for cause of
Allah”! Then Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: "If
someone is killed due to Cause of Allah”? Then he (Sall Allahu Alayhi
Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) further stated, “the one who leaves his house in
search of lawful earning to save his family from begging is also in for
the Cause of Allah, and he who leaves to search lawful earning, to
refrain from begging is also on the cause of Allah. However, if he
leaves for earning wealth is on the way of Satan”.
(An Author Abdul Razaq, V: 5, P: 271-272, Shaub-ul-Iman, H: 10377)

Hadrat Kaab bin Ajra (Allah be pleased with him) stated that a person
passed by companions (Allah be pleased with them) who on seeing
his sound physique said, “O Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam) of Allah! “Would that he be in the cause of Allah”! Then
Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If he is earning

the living for his small children, he is in the Cause of Allah, and if he
is earning to feed his old parents, still he is in the on Cause of Allah,
and if he has left for vanity then he is in the way of Satan".
(Al-Mojam Al-Kabir, V: 19, P: 129, H: 282, Majama-Al-Zwaid, V: 4, P: 325, Shaub-ul-Iman,
H: 8710, 8711)

Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) Had Garment

Business
Hadrat Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) stated that: When Abu Bakr
As-Siddiq (Allah be pleased with him) was chosen Caliph, he said,
"My people know that I deal in trading and with the engagement in
National affairs, it is not possible to continue this business. So I will
subsist my family from the National Treasury of Muslims. And as I will
be busy serving the Muslim nation, my family will eat from the
National Treasury of Muslims, and I will practise the profession of
serving the Muslims."
(Volume 3, Book 34, Number 284, Sahih Bukhari)

Ata bin Al Saib stated that when Hadrat Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased
with him) was chosen caliph; he placed a bundle of cloth at his
shoulder and left to Bazar for trading. Hadrat Umar (Allah be pleased
with him) and Hadrat Abu Ubaida bin Jarah (Allah be pleased with
him) noticed him and asked: “O Caliph of Prophet where are you
going”? He (Allah be pleased with him) replied, “Bazar”. Both of them
said, “What are you doing this”? You have been chosen as caliph of
Muslims! He replied, “Then how shall I feed my family”? Both of them
said, “let us go, we fix some scholarship for you. Then they fixed half
a goat daily and dress to cover their bodies”.
(Al Tabqat V-3, P: 1184)

None Of The Profession Of Lawful Earning Is Inferior

Nowadays a person who sells cloth by carrying the bundle on his

shoulders is considered meek and abominated whole Hadrat Abu
Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) did the same business. Imam
Ahmed bin Umer Al-Khisaf (Died in 261 H) was a great Muslim jurist,

598
FOLLOW EASY WAY OF LIFE

worshiper and ascetic and has authored many books on

jurisprudence. In the Arabic language, Khisaf means cobbler who
repairs shoes. Allama Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Qadori
was also a great jurist, in Arabic Al-Qadori means the person who
sells earthen pots. Allama Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Huseri (Died
546 H) was a jurist and in Arabic language Al Hasiri is a person who
makes leaf carpets. Imam Abu Bakr Ibn Ali Al-Hadadi (Died 800 H)
was a great scholar who authored sharah (explanation) of Mukhtasir
Al-Qadori. In Arabic language Hadad means steel binder.

Today cloth hawkers, cobblers who repair shoes, potters who make
earthen pots, makers of leaf carpets and steel binders are considered
inferior. People living in posh areas are not ready to even shake
hands with them. Whereas in the golden age of Muslims such
persons were the leaders of Muslims. In those days all professions
were considered a source of living and none was hatred. Now the
standard of respect and disrespect has changed. Now the persons
doing in interest business, hoarders, smuggler, manufacture of fake
medicine and corrupt persons are considered respectable. Those
who earn an honest living as a hawker, steel binder, carpet maker,
potter and cobbler are abominated. The people are honourable in the
eyes of Allah. Allah and His Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam) are considered inferior.
(Tibyan Al-Quran by Allama Ghulam Rasool Saeedi)

Interest Is Forbidden

Hadrat Jabir (Allah be pleased with him) said that Allah's Messenger
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) cursed the person who
derives interest, and its payer, its scriber and the two witnesses, and
he said: They are all at par (in this offence).
(Book 010, Number 3881, Sahih Muslim)

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, “Allah is Rightful that He
may not send four persons in Paradise and deprives them of the

599

taste of its blessings i.e. habitual drinker, usurer, usurper of orphan's

rights and disobedient of parents.
(Imam Hakim said it a Sahih Hadith, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 367)

Hadrat Abdullah bin Salam (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that
Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “A receipt of one
dirham as usury is severer than committing thirty-three times act of
adultery in Islam”.
(Imam Tabrani said it a Sahih Hadith, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 367)

Hadrat Bara bin Azib (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that
Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “Usury has
seventy-two grades and the lowest grade is to commit adultery with
his mother”.
(Imam Tabrani said it a Sahih Hadith, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 367)

Hadrat Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If a nation indulges in
adultery and usury, Allah's punishment becomes lawful for it”.
(Imam Abu Yaala said it a Sahih Hadith, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 367)

Hadrat Amar bin Al-Aas (Allah be pleased with him) that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, “If a nation suffers from usury,
famine is descent upon it and if a nation indulges into a bribe, fear is
imposed upon it”.
(Imam Ahmad Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 367)

Hadrat Ibn Maja (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “On My (Sall Allahu
Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) Accession (Meraj) night, I passed by a
nation who had a stomach like a warehouse from where snakes were
visible. I (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) asked, “O Gabriel
(Salam be on him)! Who are they”? He (Salam be on him) replied,
“They used to live on usury”.
(Sunan Ibn Maja, H: 2273)

600
FOLLOW EASY WAY OF LIFE

Hadrat Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Allah's
Messenger (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, “Usury
carries seventy sins and the lowest of them is like adultery with the
mother.
(Sunan Ibn Maja, H: 2274)

Hadrat Samra bin Jundab (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that:
the Prophet said, "tonight I dreamt that (Gaberial and Mekail)(Salam
on them) escorted me to a Holy land whence we proceeded to a river
of blood, where a man was standing midst the river and on its bank,
another man was standing holding stones in his hand. The man in the
river attempts to come out and when he reaches the bank the other
man pelts stones on his face and forces him to retreat. This process
continued and shall remain to continue till the Day of Judgment. I
enquired about that man and the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam) told me that the person in the river is a usurer.
(Volume 3, Book 34, Number 298, Sahih Bukhari)

This Hadith tells us about the punishment for usurers. Since they
suck the blood of poor people in this world, therefore, they were
drowned in the river of blood. May Allah! Provide our protection due
to His beloved Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam).

Reward To Accord Relief For A Debtor

Hadrat Abu Al-Yassar (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that

Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, “If someone
gives relief to a poor debtor, or writes off his debt Allah will provide
him the shelter on the Day when there will be no refuge except His
shelter”.
(Imam Ahmad, Imam Muslim, Imam Maja, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 368-369)

Hadrat Hudhaifa (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: the

Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said, "A man will be
presented to Allah Who will ask him, 'Did you do any good deeds (in

601

your life)?' He will reply, 'I did nothing”. This query will be repeated
thrice. He however will reply that he used to give my surplus money
to the masses. During the trade, he used to be convenient on wealthy
peoples and recovered amount from the poor to their convenience.
Almighty Allah will announce He is the most merciful. Let him be off
and this he will be forgiven.”
(Volume 3, Book 34, Number 291, Sahih Bukhari)

Hadrat Imran bin Hussain (Allah be pleased with him) that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If someone owes to
another person and he defers it, he will be granted reward for each
day of sacrificing”.
(Imam Ahmad, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 368-369)

Hadrat Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If a man wishes for
grant of his prayer and removal of his difficulty, he should provide
relief to the poor man (poor man be given extension/leniency so far
he is unable to pay back)”.
(Imam Ahmad, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 368-369)

Hadrat Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet
(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If someone grants delay
to a poor man till his self-sufficiency, Allah will grant him time to
repent for his sins”.
(Imam Tabrani, Ref: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 368-369)

Hadrat Buraida (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet

(Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) said: “If someone grants
delay to a poor debtor, will be rewarded as of sacrificing equal to the
amount of debt per day. Then I heard from him (Sall Allahu Alayhi
Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) saying that the same person will be rewarded
double the sacrifice of the debt per day. I requested: O Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) ! earlier You (Sall Allahu Alayhi
Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) had mentioned the rewards as sacrificing equal
to debt and now you (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) have

mentioned reward as the double sacrifice of the debt! He (Sall Allahu

Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) then replied: “Within the limit of the loan
period, the reward is single and after the expiry of the loan period,
relief granted, will be the double reward.
(Musnad Ahmad, V: 5, P: 360, Sunan Ibn Maja, P: 174, Shaub-ul-Iman, V: 7, P: 538)

Hadrat Imam Ahmad, Imam Darmi, Imam Behqi (Allah be mercy on

them) in Shaub-ul-Iman through Hadrat Abu Qatada (Allah be
pleased with him) stated that Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi
Wa’sallam) said: “If someone grants delay or forgives an indebted
person, will be placed under the shelter of Empyrean on the Day of
Judgment.
(Musnad Ahmad, V: 2, P: 359, Sunan Darmi, V-2, P: 179, Shaub-ul-Iman, V: 7, P: 535)

Hadrat Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) stated that if someone
grants delay or writes off the loan to a poor debtor, will be protected
from the heat of Hell by Allah.
(Imam Ahmad Reference: Al-Dar Al-Mansoor, V: 1, P: 368-369)

Stocking of Production For One Year

Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) used to provide
livelihood and food for a full year to his family.

Hadrat Umar (Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet (Sall
Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) used to sell dates of the garden of
Bani Nadeer and stored the food for a full year for his family needs.
(Sahih Bukhari H: 5357, Sahih Muslim H: 1757)

Hadrat Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with him) reported: Allah's

Messenger (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) leased the land of
Khaibar at 50% share of the produce of fruits and wheat, and he also
gave to his wives every year one hundred wasqs: (eighty wasqs of
dates and twenty wasqs of barley). When Hadrat Umar (Allah be
pleased with him) took over the charge of Caliphate he distributed the
(lands and trees) of Khaibar, and gave an option to the wives of
Allah's Apostle (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) to earmark for

603

themselves either, the land and water or stick to the wasqs (that they
got) every year. They differed in this matter. Some of them opted for
land and water, and some of them opted for wasqs every year.
Hadrat 'A'isha and Hafsa (Allah be pleased with them) were among
those who opted for land and water.
(Book #010, Hadith #3759, Sahih Muslim)

This action of Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) was not
for himself (Sall Allahu Alayhi Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) but his family. This
hadith mentions that stocking of the sustenance for one year for the
family is allowed and it is not hoarding. Prophet (Sall Allahu Alayhi
Wa’alihi Wa’sallam) also used to spend it upon needy persons from
this stock. Sometimes the entire stock was spent. Therefore, the
following hadith supports the same:

Hadrat Aisha (Allah be pleased with her) stated that: “Allah's Apostle
died while his (iron) armour was mortgaged to a Jew for thirty Sas of
barley”.
(Volume 4, Book 52, Number 165, Sahih Bukhari)
