Activity 2: Let Us Take Note
If you were to dig a big hole straight down into the ground, you would notice that the
temperature deep down below is getting hotter the deeper you go. Why? That is because the
interior of the Earth is full of heat. That heat is referred to Geothermal Energy!
The term geothermal energy is easy to remember if you will break it down! The Greek word
geo refers to the Earth, and thermal means heat, so geothermal energy is energy from Earth’s heat.
This energy is then used to power generators in the production of electricity.
According to the Department of Energy one-fourth or 14.4% of the electricity in the Philippines is
geothermal generated such as in Tiwi (Albay), Kidapawan (North Cotabato), Calaca (Laguna), Tongonan
(Leyte), Bago City (Negros Occidental), Valencia (Negros Oriental), and Bacon (Sorsogon).
Power plants are built in an area where it is particularly hot just below the surface such as near a group
of geysers, hot springs, or volcanic activity.
Refer to the Map of the Philippine below, name the different geothermal power plants and their specific
location. Choose your answer inside the box and write it on the space provided.
