Design of Packed Column

The document describes the design of a packed-bed distillation column for separating a binary mixture of MEG and HG. It involves determining the number of theoretical stages using McCabe-Thiele analysis, calculating column dimensions and packing requirements, and estimating heating and cooling loads. The type of packing will be carbon steel pall rings with a diameter of 1.5 feet. The total height of the packed bed will be calculated as the number of theoretical stages times the height equivalent to a theoretical plate.

Using McCabe Theile method to determine No. of theoretical stages.

Assume Binary mixture separation between MEG & HG. P = total pressure of the system = 10 mmHg

At the top Psat MEG = 1.334 KPa Psat HG = 0.1331 KPa

At bottom Psat MEG = 1.4757 KPa Psat HG = 0.1673 KPa

To find Diameter & Height of the column: Assume saturated liquid in feed:

F=

D=

B=

Reflux Ratio = 0.7 = L/D

V=L+D

Calculate ML and MV in kg/s

Assume Y= 0.0125 , H.E.T.P. = 0.5425 , flooding percentage = 60%

HETP: Height Equivalent to a Theoretical Plate

The type of packing material is carbon steel pall ring with 1.5' diameter To calculate G' we use the
equation above (Y): Packing Factor fp (m-1) = 131

To find tower area:

Total height of packed bed = No. of theoretical stages x H.E.T.P.

Each bed height is approximately ≥ its diameter

Spacing between each bed is = 2 m

Total height of tower =

To calculate thickness of column:

Pressure inside column = vacuum.

Outside pressure = 1 atm = 0.1 MN /m2

Shell mass = π * Di * H * ts * ρc.s

Volume of bed =

Total weight of packing = packed bed volume x density of packing

Each 1 m3 need 13200 unit of packing material

No. of packing material =

Cooling and heating requirements

Total Enthalpy out with Distillate QD = (mCp∆T ) MEG + (mCp∆T )DEG

Cpmean of MEG = 189.70 kJ / kmol oK

Cpmean of DEA = 441.6 kJ / kmol oK

 Enthalpy out with vapor:

QV = latent heat + sensible heat associated with that vapor

= mλ + (mCp∆T)

λMEG = 68.578 x 103 kJ / kmol

λDEG = 72.067 x 103 kJ / kmol

λAVEG = 68.58 x 103 kJ / kmol

 Enthalpy out with Reflux:

QReflux = ( mCp∆T )Reflux

 Condenser load, QC :

= QV – ( QReflux + QD )

Assuming cooling water enters the condenser at 25oC & leave at 45oC

QC = (mCp∆T )cooling water

Qc = UAΔTlm
For bottom:

Tbottom = 94.6 oC ∆T = 69.6 oC

Cpmean of MEG = 188.531 kJ / kmol 0K

Cpmean of DEG = 443.2 kJ / kmol 0K

Enthalpy out with Residue, QResidue = ( mCp∆T )liq

 Reboiler Load:

Reboiler heat load is determined from a balance over complete system

QB + QFeed = QD + Qresidue + QC

Amount of steam required,

Consider the steam enter at 2 kg/cm2 & 118.719oC

λsteam = 2205.82 kJ / kg

QB = mλ steam

Area: QB = UAΔTlm
