Chapter 1

Background of the study

Today we experience the covid-19. Not just the Philippine but the whole world experiences this covid-19 pandemic. It has
brought huge change to everyone even our system of education had change.

One of the new education systems is what we called the printed modular learning.

Based on the DepEd, about 8.8 million parts preferred modular, over the 3.9 million who noted for blended learning which
is a combination of different modalities, radio, tv, or online. Parent who opted for online only 3.8 million. ( Moona Circiaco)
(lsr).

The Philippine education system is now adapting to the new blended learning as public schools were set to resume its
classes nationwide.

“Education cannot wait,” says DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones. To maintain the education of millions of Filipino students,
the government implemented a distance learning approach. Distance learning, also known as correspondence education
or home study, is a form of education where there is little or no face-to-face interaction between students and their
instructors.  This type of modality has three categories. In which, one of the highly convenient for most of the typical
Filipino students is the Modular Distance Learning. It was also the most preferred learning system of majority of
parents/guardians based on the result of the Learning Enrolment and Survey Form (LESF).

The Department of Education will be the one to provide and distribute the self-learning modules to every student every
week through their respective schools. They will have ample time to study and assess the modules before the start of
weekly class.

Parents working from home will now have additional work — providing tech support or guidance in their schoolwork. It is
difficult adjusting meetings and other tasks with online classes. Both teachers and parents will need additional workshops
in the conduct of modular learning. While these challenges are still being addressed, parents and caregivers can look
forward to this new arrangement as an opportunity to be a partner in raising kids with the school in teaching them
necessary life skills.

Parents have always played a crucial role in their children’s emotional and intellectual development. They serve as their
children’s first teachers, and give them the stepping stones they need to adapt to life in school.

As the coronavirus pandemic puts face-to-face learning to a halt, parents find themselves at the frontlines of education
once more.

Parents now have the important task of ensuring that their children receive quality education without compromising their
safety. Although education takes a major hit as classrooms are forced to close their doors to eager students, countless
parents are stepping up to support their children who are adjusting to the new set-up for the incoming school year.

“Education is the key for students to become successful in life. As a parent, I want my kids to still be able to continue
learning and gain the knowledge that they need to have especially during these trying times,” Imee echoed the sentiment.
This may affect their works but as parents they need to do their duties as mother.

Intentions

With the above scenario, the researcher wanted to conduct or considered working on this study to find out if there’s an
impact of modular learning to the employment of working parents. And to assess the effectiveness of modular learning not
just to student but also to teachers and parents.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study focused on the impacts of modular learning to the works of parents from September up to now to the selected
parents and students.

Specifically it aims to answer the following questions.

1. What are the experiences of parents in modular learning?


2. How did the parents manage their time?
3. How parents cope with this situation?

The sub questions are:

1.1 What are your unforgettable moments?


1.2 What are your difficulties?

1.3 What is your insight in modular learning?

2.1 What are your schedules during pandemic?


2.2 How did you manage your schedules?

2.3 What are your strategies to manage your time?

3.1 What are your ways to cope with this situation?

3.2 What are your coping mechanisms?

3.3 What are your learning insights in coping with this situation?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROBLEM

The result of the study will be beneficial to: working parents, students and teachers.

We are affected by the covid-19 pandemic. Still the department of education need to continue the education through
different modalities, printed modules, is one of the preferred in the Philippines. This system is teacher less way…so the
parents need to be there for them to be able to guide her/his lessons.

Involvement of parents to the modular learning of the students is very helpful. More likely to have higher grades and are
determined to study, and the parents will spent time along with their children.

Beneficiaries:

Students-

They are elementary and high school. They are also the concern in this modular learning. In this study, the findings of the
research will enlightened, prepare and become beneficial to the students of Don Carlos.

Parents-

This refers to the one who works for the family. The overcome of the study will help the parents to prepare and be ready
with this new system of education.

Teachers-

The information presented will be able them to know what a parent and student do in this modular learning and its impact
to the employment of parents.

Scope of delimitation

The study focused on the areas of Sinangguyan which is part of the municipality of Don Carlos. Don Carlos Bukidnon has
an area of 82.52 square miles. The populations are having a population of 66,959 people. People who live there have
many students. And the parents there are working in a farm or companies the whole day. The researchers considered
working on this study to find out if there’s an impact of modular learning to the employment of working parents. And to
assess the effectiveness of modular learning not just to students but also to teachers and parents.

Theoretical framework

The theory of intelligence (implicit theory of intelligence, intelligence mindset) (Dweck and Leggett, 1988) refers to beliefs
that people hold concerning the nature of intelligence, namely, the changeability of intelligence (Hong et al., 1999).
Specifically, there are two main types of theories of intelligence: the incremental theory and the entity theory. The
incremental theory assumes that intelligence is malleable and changeable, most notably through effort and persistence,
while the entity theory assumes that intelligence is fixed and not easily changed (Dr. Lance Emerson. (2012) Based on
empirical research, Walker et al. (2005) put forward a theoretical model, considering that the parent’s theory of
intelligence was an important psychological factor influencing parental involvement.

Parental involvement, namely, parents’ engagement in their children’s education, is a variety of behaviors that parents
perform to promote their children’s academic achievement and psychological development in their homes and schools
(Seginer, 2006). Theoretical studies such as the models by Walker et al. (2005) and Hornby and Lafaele have described
the link between parental theory of intelligence and parental involvement. These studies have contended that, on the one
hand, parents who hold an incremental theory of intelligence most likely emphasize the role of effort, motivate children to
accept shortcomings, encourage them to think about the mechanisms underlying specific questions, and are more
involved in education.

Chapter 2

Review of the Related Literature and Studies

Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM) based on the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC’s) provided on the Department of education. The modules include sections on motivation
and assessment that serve as complete guide on both teachers and students desired competencies (Dr. Lance Emerson.
(2012)

The first part of our Review of Related Literature focuses on the impact of modular learning to the employment of working
parents.

Data from learner enrolment and survey form showed that 8.8 million parents in the Philippines preferred modular learning
while 3.9 million parents voted for blended learning which combines different modalities: module, television and radio with
online. Many students preferred also modular learning, so parents had no choice but to adapt modular learning from
Department of Education. (DepEd)

Individual instruction in modular distance learning is useful in remote areas with limited internet access such as mountain
areas. Learners use self-learning modules in print or digital format. (Dr. Lance Emerson. (2012)

The parents worry that they might spend less time in their vegetable farms. Some students use synchronous and
asynchronous sessions around 20-30 minutes of synchronous and followed by asynchronous sessions with a guided
independent studies from Monday to Friday. Parents did not doubt their ability to teach but faced challenges in the
discipline of having problems to facilitate instructions. (Noemi Lardizabal-Dado)

Parents working from home will now have additional work- providing tech support or guidance in their schoolwork. It is
difficult adjusting meetings and other tasks with modular learning. Both teachers and parents will need additional
workshops in the conduct of modular learning. While these challenges are still being addressed, parents and caregivers
can look forward to this new arrangement as an opportunity to be

partner in raising kids with the school in teaching them new necessary life skills. (Noemi Lardizabal-Dado)

According to the article “New Normal: How Parents Embrace the Challenges in Education”, because of this pandemic
covid 19, we are experiencing this harsh reality. But we Filipinos have unique way of finding means to survive and look at
it with a different means of income. People who have lost their job are now doing online selling. We should also remember
that even though covid 19 pandemic are blocking us, education still continue and will not stop. Different modalities have
been considered and explored. Many preferred modular learning. This is very new to everyone especially to parents since
they will take a big part in the new normal set up parents will take on the role of teachers. Some questions have been
asked; how will parents be able to manage to help their kids while looking for ways to earn? (Arias, July 31 2020)

The Department of Education had announced that parents do not have to worry because teachers will also help students.
This set-u is promising as this will still allow parents to earn and at the same time, their children will continue to learn at
home.

The Department of Education said that schools are getting ample number of enrolees for the incoming school year. Now
parents are taking these changes as challenges. It is their opportunities to be able to monitor their children and to have
more direct involvement on their learning.

Psychologist Levygotsky defines parents role as “The More Knowledgeable Others”, so someone who has better
understanding or higher ability level than the learner, concerning a particular task, process or concept. ( Saul McLeod,
updated 2020)

A parent said “I will do my best to help in the studies of my children. I am willing to learn their lessons, be strict when it
comes to their classes. I will try my best because I believe that parents are the child’s first teachers’.

But in contrary to this popular belief on modular learning, parents are not replacement of teacher. Parents are partners of
teachers in education, so they can still have their own work. (Noemi Lardizabal-Dado)

Review of Related Study

Parents play a critical role in providing learning opportunities at home and in linking what children learn. By participating in
and facilitating diverse learning experience and activities outside the school, parents become an important factor in
children’s overall learning education. (Dr. Lance Emerson, Josh Fear, Dr. Staccey Fox, Emma Sanders)

As Muller (2009) states; family-school and community partnership are re-defining the boundaries and functions of
education. They enlarge parental and community capacity, they create conditions in while children learn more effectively.
In these ways, they take education beyond the school gates. Considered broadly, parental enlargement consist of
partnership between families, schools and communities, raising parental awareness of the benefits of engaging in their
children’s education and providing them with skills to do so. (Muller (2009)

SER originally arose in response to the landmark Coleman Report (1996) in the United States and the Plowden Report
(1967) in the United Kingdom, which both asserted that schools make little difference to student outcomes. Since that
time, many studies have confirmed that family background and other non-school factors are more influential than schools
in determining academic outcomes.

Parent’s involvement may positively impact students’ academic attainment such as; having higher grades and test scores,
enrolment in higher level or advanced classes, higher graduation rates. Involvements of parents also have negative
impact to parents work such as; less time for work, cant focused on earning money, can’t manage time and no time to
bond. (Dr. Lance Emerson. (2012)

Parental involvement refers to the amount of participation a parent has when it comes to the schooling of his/her children.
Some shows positive effects to parents but sometime parents has hesitations when they involve themselves with their
children’s modular learning and at the same time earning money. It is important for schools to recognize the distance of
works of parents and to their children’s education. Parenting is important in the Philippine society because family is
viewed as a centre to one’s social world. But social contexts in which Filipino families are embedded have changed over
the past ten years (ochoa and torre n.o). Children’s learning is increasingly moving toward. Children’s learning is
increasingly moving toward a broader vision of the 21 st century learning. It needs what we call the parental involvement.
Parents are positioned to be the one to help develop their children’s knowledge which has a huge impact to their works.
This research uses qualitative to determine or to know the impacts of modular learning to those parents who are working
and that they need to double their time and efforts for this kind of situation. (Dr. Lance Emerson. (2012)

Theoretical framework

We describe a theory to account for the acquisition and extinction of response rate (conditioning) and pattern (timing).
This modular theory is a development of packet theory (Kirkpatrick, 2002; Kirkpatrick & Church, 2003) that adds a
distinction between pattern and strength memories, as well as contributing closed-form equations. We describe the theory
using equations related to a flow diagram and illustrate it by an application to an experiment with repeated acquisitions
and extinctions of a multiple-cued-interval procedure using rats. The parameter estimates for the theory were based on a
calibration sample from the data, and the predictions for different measures of performance on a validation sample from
the same data (cross-validation). The theory’s predictions were similar to predictions based on the reliability of the
behavior. (Paulo Guilhardi)

Cognitive Development Theory Having been called a constructivist as well as an interactionist, Jean Piaget proposed a
theory of cognitive development in children and emphasized IJAES – Vol. 11 No. 1 Pg. No. 5 the constructive role of
experience with peers and family members. The basic assumption of his theory was that young children are active
learners with a constant drive to match their internal constructions (their own view of the real world) and external
constructions (the external realities they face with in their surroundings) (Piaget, 1981)

While research on implicit theories have captured the interest of researchers in several domains (Aronson et al.,
2002; Knee et al., 2003; Spinath et al., 2003; Tamir et al., 2007; Chen et al., 2008), continuous research on ITI
conveys the important effect that this implicit factor can have on academic and emotional functioning (Cohen et al.,
2006; Blackwell et al., 2007; Walton and Cohen, 2011; Yeager et al., 2013).

Individuals can typically perceive intelligence as more of a fixed unchanging characteristic (entity theory or beliefs)
while others consider it as something that is malleable and prone to development (incremental theory or beliefs or
growth mindset). Thus, individuals who hold entity or fixed theories of intelligence tend to believe that skills and
abilities are relatively stable (Dweck, 1999) and that their performance is a consequence of that stability (Hong et al.,
1999).

CHAPTER 3

Research methodology

Research methodology is the specific procedures or techniques used to identify, select, process, and analyze information
about a topic. In a research paper, the methodology section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall
validity and reliability.

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study used qualitative. Qualitative research is multimethod in focus, involving an interpretation, naturalistic approach
to its subject matter. This means that qualitative researchers study to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of
the meanings people bring to them.

The thematic analysis method was used in this study because it is well-suited in answering the research questions
appropriately and adequately. Thematic analysis is a method of analyzing qualitative data. It is usually applied to a set of
texts, such as interview transcripts. The researcher closely examines the data to identify common themes – topics, ideas
and patterns of meaning that come up repeatedly

Research Locale

I am currently living at Sinangguyan Don Carlos Bukidnon. I will be conducting my study in our place. Don Carlos
Bukidnon has an area of 82.52 square miles and there are 10 puroks. The populations are having a population of 66,959
people. People lived by farming and working on companies to survive. People in our place are not so rich and not so poor,
just right.

DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUES

Interview questionnaires- provides questionaires

E-survey- uses digital mediums in meeting. Used applications for video calling.

On-site- interview on place where the person is working.

Survey- provides questionnaires

Household survey – surveying door to door. You’re going to their houses personally.

These are the main techniques on collecting data’s for the study. E-survey fits todays happening that we’re facing
pandemic. I am going to interview them through gadgets and video calling applications.

Data collection process

I am seeking knowledge about the impact of modular learning to the working parents which the participants will provide
information based on their experiences. Here in our barangay, there are many parents who are working and had children
taking modular learning. There were 10 potential participants of the study.

I will send them my letter for them to be informed where and when will I conduct my interview. I will use questionnaires
and video calling for those who don’t want face to face and to prevent the spread of covid-19. The interview or the
collecting of data’s will be done safely and peacefully.

Instrumentation

I used interview as a data collection. The questionnaires were typed in English but when I gave the questionnaires to the
parents, I translated it into bisaya so that some parents will understand and can answer using binocular. But I make sure
that it will still convey the same meaning in English.

Questions:

1. What are the experiences of parents in modular learning?

2. How did the parents manage their time?

3. How parents cope with this situation?

The sub questions are:

1.1 What are your unforgettable moments?


1.2 What are your difficulties?
1.3 What is your insight in modular learning?
2.1 What are your schedules during pandemic?

2.2 How did you manage your schedules?

2.3 What are your strategies to manage your time?

3.3 What are your learning insights in coping with this situation?

The items contained in the questionnaire, comprising open ended questions, attempted to identify the impacts of modular
learning to the employments of working parents.

Result and data analysis

This chapter contains the experiences, insights, opinions and perspective of the respondents about the impacts of
modular learning to the employment of working parents.

The world today is experiencing the pandemic covid-19. It brings a lot of changes and it challenges each one of us. The
world has seen in 2020 an unprecedented global outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, a new strain of coronavirus, causing the
COVID-19 pandemic, and radically changing our lives and work conditions. Many scientists are working tirelessly to find a
treatment and a possible vaccine. Furthermore, governments, scientific institutions and companies are acting quickly to
make resources available, including funds and the opening of large-volume data repositories, to accelerate innovation and
discovery aimed at solving this pandemic

The Philippine education system is now adapting to the new blended learning nationwide. Despite the calls for an
academic freeze due to the corona virus outbreak, the Department of Education still believes that education should not be
compromised. Majority of the parents prefer modular learning. The Department of Education will be the one to provide and
distribute the self-learning modules to every student every week through their respective schools. They will have ample
time to study and assess the modules before the start of weekly class.

With the current situations we are facing, this research will explore the insights, experiences, strategies and mechanisms
of parents in facing this kind of situation. Parents are struggling on this new learning landscape, the modular mode of
learning in their homes. These respondents are currently living in Sinangguyan Don Carlos Bukidnon. The parents are
selected depending on who are willing to participate, parents who are experiencing the impacts of modular learning to
their works.

After the data gathering and result analysis, three themes emerged in investigating the study about impacts of modular
learning to the employment of working parents.

Through interviewing in an online chat or video calling, the researcher analyses the data and there are 3 themes
emerged. There was being drawn by the responses of the respondents.

Three themes are:

1. Modular learning is adding works to parents.


2. Modular learning gives more knowledge to their children even at home.
3. Modular learning took most of the times of parents
Theme 1

Modular learning is adding works to parents. In a distance learning approach, parents would have to play an


active role in the learning process. They would be the one to facilitate and guide their children through
the modular lessons that would be sent to students while doing remote learning.

As the coronavirus pandemic puts face-to-face learning to a halt, parents find themselves at the frontlines of education
once more. Parents now have the important task of ensuring that their children receive quality education without
compromising their safety. Although education takes a major hit as classrooms are forced to close their doors to eager
students, countless parents are stepping up to support their children who are adjusting to the new set-up for the incoming
school year. They will now have another work aside from working to earn for money, they have also need to work in
facilitating their children’s modules.

Figure 1 show the responses which indicate that modular learning is just adding works to parents.

Respondent 1 It’s hard to work at the same time teaching him because I’m
working from home.

Respondent 2 To skip work in order to get my children’s modules.

Respondent 3 It’s hard and tiring that after work I have to do teach him after work.

Respondent 4 It’s hard because it doubled my work first I need to take care to my
children and then doing household chores.

Respondent 5 It just adding works to me.

While these challenges are still being addressed, parents and caregivers can look forward to this new arrangement as an
opportunity to be a partner in raising kids with the school in teaching them necessary life skills. The more parents
involved in their children's education, the better their entire class's motivation, behaviour, and grades become.

Encouraging parent engagement is more than common courtesy. It's one of the best ways to create a positive learning
environment for every student. And parents must play their important role in this situation as parents.

Theme 2

Modular learning gives more knowledge to their children even at home. In this situation that we are experiencing
pandemic, many students will be bored and some might stay overtime in their online games but the DepEd don’t want that
education will be stop. Even at home education needs to be continued. Students need to continue their learning through
this modular learning which provides knowledge for every student. So, the parent doesn’t have to worry about the
knowledge of their children and it will lessen the dropout case of students.

Scholars generally agree that modular degrees have many advantages for students in terms of their capacity to offer
flexibility, choice, access and mobility. It is also widely argued that modular structures may be beneficial to universities in
that they potentially allow institutions to respond to the needs of employer.

Figure 2 show responses of the respondents that modular learning gives more knowledge to their children even at
home.

Respondent 2 It prevents them to always stay in front of the computers or
phones. They spend most of their time in their modules.
Respondent 3 Provides knowledge even though it’s not as the same as
they get from their teachers.
Respondent 4 Took away their boredom and they have their modules
which made them happy because they will learn something
even at this situation.
Respondent 5 It’s good to learn.

This means that amidst covid-19 the students are willing to learn even at home. And this made their parents happy to
them.

Theme 3

Modular learning took most of the times of parents.in modular learning, children needs someone to guide them in their
modules, someone who can be their second teacher. Parents are the one who will be that for their children but they also
have their works and that made them took their times in doing modules instead of working.

According to Manila Times, the crucial role of a parent in this situation is to be their teacher some parents’ worry about
their vegetable garden or their works because they might spend less time with their works because of this new education
system.

Figure 3 shows the responses of respondents which indicates that modular learning took most of the time of parents.

but I can’t, my son always needs my presence.

These Reponses shows that modular learning took most of the times of the parents. In this new normal, new systems and
there must be new way for the parents on how to manage their time because in this kind of situation, your children needs
you the most.

Summary of findings, conclusions and recommendation

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary of findings

The study explored the impacts of modular learning to the employment of working parents living in the areas of
Sinangguyan Don Carlos Bukidnon who had children that are doing modular learning in their homes. The impacts of
modular learning to the employment of working parents were explored the year 2020-2021.

This study employed qualitative phenomenological and thematic analysis. It involves emerging questions, procedures and
data typically collected in the participants through online chat or video calling. The researcher read the parents responses.
There are 5 respondents of parents that are experiencing the impacts of modular learning.

Researcher organized them according to their similarity of ideas and concepts. The researcher formulates them as a take-
off point of the researcher in analysing the impacts of modular learning to the employment of working parents.

Based on the data, theme was drawn,

Theme 1: modular learning is adding works to parents.

Our parents are the one gives our needs and supports us in our schooling and financially. As the covid-19 strikes the
whole world, everyone has been experiencing the hardship of this situation specially parents. Even though pandemic does
still exist, the education needs to continue. Parents will not only have to work but they also need to give time to their
children in providing support and guide to their modules.

This new system of education honestly speaking, it doubled the works of parents.

Figure 1 shows the response of the respondents which support this statement.

Theme 2: modular learning gives more knowledge to their children.

Then, many parents worry if their children are really studying in their school. But in this situation, parents might think how
their children will learn in this case. Some children might be busy watching k-dramas, anime, and playing online games.
But with this modular learning which is the new system of education, parents will not have to worry about their children
because modules can provide the knowledge they need even at home.

Figure 2 shows the response of the respondents which support this statement.
Theme 3: modular learning took most of the time of parents.

Parents are working and they have their children who are doing modular. Parents will not just work the whole day while
their children need them. So they will give time teaching their children but it will not only take 1 hour or 2 hours as much
as possible more than 3 hours so their work will be pending because they have to guide their children. Most of their time
will be spend to these modules.

Figure 3 shows the response of the respondents that supports this statement.

Conclusions

Based on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. Modular learning made the works of the parents to be more difficult.


2. Modular leaning is just another works for the parents that will take their time.
3. Modular learning gives knowledge to their children even at home.
4. Parents need to change their schedules just to put their selves in this new learning system
5. Involvement of parents in modular leaning made them spend less in other works.
6. It shows how parents did their best and manage their time to spend time in modules o their children.

Recommendations

In light if the study conducted, the following recommendation are then formulated.

1. Parents should give time guiding their children in their modules.


2. Modular learning will not be a disturbance to parents.
3. Parents must be happy that DepEd came up with this idea or system.
4. Parents should have better schedules and fix their time.
5. Parents must be glad to have this new system.
6. Modular learning should not be just a work to parents, it’s a lifetime help to their children.

This study is all about finding the impacts of modular learning to the employment of working parents. As we are
experiencing covid-19 pandemic, the department of education came up with this new system, the modular learning
system. Children will have their modules at home but they need someone to guide them in answering their modules and
that is the crucial role of parents in this situation. The study is conducted in the areas of Sinangguyan Don Carlos
Bukidnon. There were 5 respondents. The respondents are chosen depending on their availability. The study employed
thematic technique while the research design is qualitative research. The study will show the impacts of modular learning
to employment of working parents. That modular learning will help children in learning but can affect the works of every
parent.

This study will gather experiences, insights, comments and perceptions of the respondents.
