Argumentative Essay Against Animal

Experimenting

Since the dawn of time, animals have been considered as inferior to human

beings and of less importance. Therefore, scientists have no problem using these

creatures as subjects for their experiments. Ranging from the medical field to the

astronomical field, scientists have been experimenting on animals for decades in order

to come out with a conclusion regarding what could happen if these experiments are

done on human beings. However, this act is cruel, dangerous and mostly unreliable.

This essay is going to talk about the reasons why animals should not be used for

scientific experimenting.

The main fields rely heavily on animal experimentation are astronomy and

medicine. In astronomy, the most famous animal experimentation subject is the space

dog named Laika who was sent by the Soviet Union to orbit the earth back in 1957.The

survival of the dog was never expected by the soviet scientists since the only goal from

this whole experiment was to see if the environment of the spaceflight would have

nefarious effects on the dogs’ health and therefore relate the results to what would

happen to man during the same spaceflight.

As for the medical field, doctors test their medicinal drugs on a variety of species

to study the aftereffects before releasing the medicine to the public. Sometimes, doctors

even make animals infected with human diseases such as HIV or cancer and push

them to go through disgraceful suffering just to come out with conclusions that would

not always apply to the human body as it could react differently to an animal’s body. Dr.

Richard Klausner, former director of the US National Cancer Institute, stated “The

history of cancer research has been the history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have

cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in human beings.”(Cimons

1998).

Statistics also approve how animal testing is insignificant. According to a Cruelty

Free International, an association working to end animal experimenting worldwide,

studies have shown that 90% of drugs successful on animals fail miserably when

applied on human beings and that only 19% out 93 dangerous side effects could be

predicted by testing on animals(Crueltyfreeinternational.org). More specifically, using

mice and rats is only accurate 43% of the time on drug safety tests. Another study also

had shown that out of 48 cancer drugs to treat 68 types of cancer approved by the

European Medicines Agency from 2009 to 2013, almost 50% showed no survival

benefits. (Crueltyfreeinternational.org). Moreover, in 2015 HIV/AIDS vaccines have

been successful in protecting many animal species. However, everyone of these cures

had failed to protect human(peta.org).

We must also mention that the benefit we draw from animal testing against the

massive number of animals massacred each year for this cause is merely profitable. In

spite of the use of over 115 million animals every year for animal experimenting, only 22
of the drugs produced with this experimenting were approved by the U.S. food and drug

association. Furthermore, animal testing had had many dangerous outcomes. As an

example, a drug named Vioxx which is a treatment for arthritis was found to be safe on

different animal species. However, it caused around 320 000 heart attacks and strokes

as well as 140 000 deaths. Another similar occurrence happened in France in 2016

where on drug trial volunteer died and four others were left with serious brain damage.

This drug was supposed to heal anxiety and Parkinson’s disease after being tried on a

variety of animal species (Crueltyfreeinternational.org).

Scientists seem to simply omit the fact that animals are much different than

human beings. Many of the diseases we get are totally unknown to animals and can

never be diagnosed with them such as Parkinson’s disease, major types of heart

disease, many types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV and schizophrenia. In

addition, things we do that seem very normal to us can be very harmful to other species.

Let’s take for example man’s loyal friend. Eating chocolate or some delicious fruits like

grapes or avocado might be very delightful for us humans, but it is very toxic to dogs.

On a more medicinal level, Aspirin, which is our holy grail when it comes to curing

headaches, is greatly nefarious to different species such as cats and mice.

As disturbing as it might seem, sometimes animal experimenting is not even

related to science, the majority of cosmetics laboratories test their products on animals

that have a skin composition similar to the human skin, which is disturbing as these

people go beyond science and torture animals for their own profit.

As a conclusion, animal experimenting is a very bad action that should be

banned as soon as possible due to it’s unpleasant effects on animals as well as human
beings on a relatively equal level. Many believe that science cannot make advances

without having to “sacrifice” animal life. However, this statement isn’t totally accurate. In

many fields, scientists were able to develop many new theories and make

unprecedented discoveries that revolutionized science as a whole without having to use

animals as subjects for research. It might be very difficult to let go of the method we’ve

been using for several decades. But it is a must for our development as intellectually

and emotionally driven species.
