Phase 3

The last part of the student's Rube Goldberg project will involve an individual assessment where the teacher will ask questions about the machine and its design. The student can prepare answers in advance. Questions will cover the simple machines used, the machine's steps, levers, sources of error, materials choice, and revisions made. The student will be evaluated on explaining their design's scientific concepts, reflecting on the design process, and evaluating the final design. Assessments will begin on May 3rd, 2021.

Rube Goldberg Machine

Phase Three: Questions (Individual)

The last part of your Rube Goldberg project will be done individually. You will meet with your
teacher, and they will ask you questions about your machine and the building process. The
assessments will begin on: Monday, May 3rd, 2021

You are able to research the questions in advance and prepare answers. You will not be
asked all the questions but will be asked at least one question from each criteria (displayed
using different colours). Please review the rubric prior to beginning your work!

Rube Goldberg Machine Evaluation and Analysis Questions

1) Identify all the simple machines in your Rube Goldberg machine.

2) What are the steps of your machine?
3) What class of lever(s) are in your Rube Goldberg machine?
4) What would you do differently next time?
5) Are there any sources of error or difficulty in your machine?
6) What is the advantage of your ramp (inclined plane)?
○ Where do we see ramps in everyday life? What is an example?
7) Did you research anything to help or inspire your design? If so, what resources did you
use?
8) Why did you choose the materials that you chose?
○ If you had unlimited resources, would you change some aspects of your
machine, or keep it the same? Why?
9) Could you interchange one of the components of your machine with a different simple
machine? If so, which components and why?
10) What changes did you make along the way? Why?
○ How does your machine differ from your blueprint? Why?
11) In the design process, what part did you find most challenging? Most rewarding?
12) What revisions were made in the design process?
13) What is a real life example of a Rube Goldberg machine? How does it work?
14) Does your machine have any unnecessary or redundant steps? Which steps?
15) Could your machine do the same task with less steps? What steps could be omitted?
