Resistance Lab (L) : Activity A: Using The Rheostat

This document provides instructions for two resistance lab activities. Activity A involves using a rheostat to measure resistance at varying lengths and creating a graph of resistance versus length. Students are asked to analyze the relationship between length and resistance based on the data. Activity B involves using a multimeter to measure the resistance of different household items and calculating current through each using Ohm's Law.

Activity A: Using the rheostat:

1. Set your multi-meter to 200 Ohms. Make sure the red chord is in the plug for
measuring resistance (Ohms, Ω)
2. Start the slider on the end of the rheostat that is closest to 0ohms.
3. Record the resistance of your rheostat as you slide the top slider along its length.
Make a measurement every 2.0 cm.
4. Make a line Graph with resistance on the y-axis and the length on the x axis.
5. Answer the analysis questions.

Length Resistance
(cm) (Ohm)
Analysis: Answer in complete sentences!
1. Explain the trends. What is the relationship between length and resistance? (use
the data and the graph)

2. Explain how your data supports the principles taught in class for this unit.

3. Explain any discrepancies in your data or any errors that were made and how
they affect the data.

Activity B: Determine the resistance of various resistors.

1. Set your multi-meter to 200 Ohms. Make sure the red chord is in the plug for
measuring resistance (Ohms, Ω)
2. Use the multi-meter to find the resistance of each of the items listed below. Use
your thumbs to press the electrodes firmly at the points of contact. Record the
resistance for each object.
3. Current will be calculated for each item in the table below using the
function from the google sheet- Part II.
