Direct Instruction Lesson Plan 1

This lesson plan aims to teach students how to distinguish different types of triangles by constructing them from given angle or side measures. The teacher will activate prior knowledge about triangles and introduce new information through a PowerPoint lecture. Students will then practice drawing triangles at the board when given measures, discussing with classmates. Finally, students will complete an independent worksheet and reflection before a formative quiz assessment. The goal is for students to independently distinguish triangles using given measures.

Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template

Teachers: Saige Phillips Subject: Geometry

AZ State Standards:
 Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures, and describe the relationships between
them.
Learning Objective:
 Students will be able to distinguish different types of triangles by drawing geometric shapes
to construct triangles from three measures of angles or sides.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
.
¨ Determine the condition and degree, the setting or situation in which the student will be able to express the depth and extent
of learning?

Formative: Throughout the lesson, questions will be able to be asked by students so that I can then
answer by further explain and expanding on the ideas being taught. We will also have a class activity
where students will be able to come to the board and practice some problems where help form me and
classmates.

Summative: Students will be given a worksheet/quiz at the end of class.

Key Academic Vocabulary: (Consider Bloom’s Materials Needed: Premade worksheet with
Verbs) problems (approximately 10 problems)
distinguish
construct Pencils/pens/colored pencils

Opening Activity
¨ Activate student interest and uncover prior knowledge
¨ Present the lesson objective in an engaging and student-friendly way

Will start out by engaging students into discussion of information that they had learned
in prior years. For example, in sixth grade, a geometry standard includes finding the area
of right triangles, and other triangles, so I could start conversation off by asking
students what triangles are, what types are there, how many angles do they have,
etcetera. I will be utilizing the whiteboard to write down brainstorm ideas and examples.

Instructional Input “I do”

Teacher Will: Student Will:
¨ Determine the new information you will add to ¨ Actively capture and process the new material and
students prior knowledge. connect to their prior knowledge
¨ Address misunderstandings or common student ¨ Actively engage with the new content
errors that may be uncovered within prior
knowledge
¨ How will you explain and model behavioral
expectations?
¨ Provide explicit details in this section so that
another person could teach it

During this time, I will start to present new information to

the class using PowerPoint presentation. I will lecture the

new information including: During this lecture it is expected for students to be actively
listening, taking notes, and asking questions when needed.
 how to draw a triangle with three angle measures
 explain that a triangle can only have 180 degrees total.
 Show what conditions make a unique triangle
 How to draw a triangle with sides given

Guided Practice “We do”

Teacher Will: Student Will:
¨ Provide guidance to all students as they practice,
model your expectations for understanding. ¨ Practice all knowledge/skills required of the objective,
¨ Provide multiple opportunities to practice new with your support
content and skills with your support. ¨ Engage in student-to-student interaction
¨ Provide opportunity to utilize the support of peers ¨ Begin to practice in ways that lead to independent

¨ Provide explicit details in this section so that
another person could teach it.
Students will either come up to the board to

students can volunteer to come to the board
and try to complete the problem. During this
time discussion and help from classmates is
encouraged

Independent Practice “You do”

Teacher Will: Student Will:
¨ Coach and correct during this practice activity ¨ Independently practice the knowledge and skills required by

facilitate the practice. ¨ Have opportunity for peer to peer feedback

During this time students will work on a worksheet

During this time I am open to questions from with similar problems that we worked on as a class
students when stuck. I will give information,
but limited to try and push them to figure out
the answers on their own.
Closing Activity:
¨ Students will reflect on learning by summarizing and stating the significance of what they learned. Determine how students
will acknowledge the new information that was added/developed within their schema.

There will be a small discussion over what we went over today and what we learned,
then students will take a quiz over the information
