Homework Set 1

This document contains instructions for 4 exercises involving mechanics concepts like forces, moments, velocities, and kinematics. Exercise 1.1 involves determining force and moment components for a cable attached to a plate and shaft. Exercise 1.5 asks to calculate the volume of a nonorthogonal parallelepiped. Exercise 1.8 deals with polar coordinates and velocities parallel and perpendicular to a position vector. Exercise 1.10 involves differentiating positions to find velocities of a moving collar and bar system.

MEEN-5318 Spring 2021 Homework Set 1 K Number

Last Name First Name

EXERCISE 1.1 The rectangular plate is welded at corner A to the

vertical shaft and braced by cable BC. The tension in the cable is 5
kN. (a) Determine the components parallel to the edges of the plate of
the force the cable applies to the plate. (b) Determine the moment
about corner A of the force applied by the cable. (c) Determine the
moment about the axis of the shaft of the force applied by the cable.
(Hint: Use A as the origin of frame xyz. The direction of y is from A to
B. x direction is along another edge of the plate. z direction is perpendicular to the plate
upward.)

EXERCISE 1.5 The intersecting edges of a nonorthogonal parallelepiped are defined by the
position vectors 𝑟̅ B/A = -20 𝑖̅ + 30 𝑗̅ + 5𝑘̅, 𝑟̅ C/A = 8 𝑖̅ + 25 𝑗̅ + 10𝑘̅, 𝑟̅ D/A = 4 𝑖̅ - 2 𝑗̅ - 15𝑘̅
mm. Determine the volume of this object.

EXERCISE 1.8 Polar coordinates in the xy plane are defined by the radial distance R and the polar
angle θ measured from the x axis. The corresponding representation of position is 𝑟̅ P/O = Rcosθ 𝑖̅
+ Rsinθ 𝑗̅. Suppose that R = ρ + ε sin (αt) and θ = αt2/2. Determine the velocity of point P, then
evaluate the components of this velocity parallel and perpendicular to 𝑟̅ P/O.

EXERCISE 1.10 The collar slides to the left as the interconnected bars swing in
the vertical plane. The position of the collar is x = 20 sin (50t) mm, and the
angles are θ1 = 0.2π cos (50t), θ2 = 0.2π sin (50t − π/3) rad. Determine the
velocity of the lower end by differentiating its position in terms of horizontal
and vertical components.
(Hint: Use the left fixed end of the bar as the origin of the frame. x direction is
along the bar to the right while y direction is perpendicular to the bar
downward.)
