COURSE OBJECTIVES:
MODULE 1
INTRODUCTION
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Recreation is a means of relaxing the mind and the body. It is important for a person to engage in activity that
relieves day-to-day tension. Recreation is for everybody, for it is universal need of people.
Recreational activities can be instruments for developing physical health and outlets for self-expression and
creativity. They serve as a means for developing character and possible clinical applications to individuals with
chronic pain and health impairments. There are many types of recreation that may suit a person’s taste and lifestyle.
He or she may engage in painting, sports, writing, or composing music. One thing is important: a recreational
activity helps a person reduce stress.
This module focuses on different outdoor and indoor activities and the importance of recreational activities in the
development of an individual in all phases of life.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain the basic concept of recreation and its characteristics and importance.
2. Identify different recreation activities.
3. Determine how recreational activities can help in one’s physical, emotional, mental, and social development.
4. Utilize skills learned to sustain personal recreational activities.
5. Assess performance based on a set of criteria.
6. Analyze results of assessment for improvement of performance.
Recreation is the use of time in a creative way, and in many ways, a therapeutic refreshment of one’s body or
mind. The choice of hours for recreation is, for employees, restricted by their work schedule, and for students, by
school hours. For people with their own business, it is also restricted by the requirements of the works such as the
operating hours of the business, based on the wishes of their customers, laws, and customs.
1. Weekends
2. Holidays
3. Special occasions such as anniversaries and birthdays.
Recreation can become an organized activity of local governments. Local governments often create parks or
community centers. These provide venues for organized sports, arts, and crafts, and activities of senior citizens.
Without recreation, life would be unbearable, unsatisfying, and unbalanced. Recreation opens the road to
opportunities for self discovery, self-expression, and activity.
Characteristics of Recreation
The characteristics of recreation mentioned above do not restrict the scope of recreation for any individual or group.
When a recreational activity exhibits majority of the said characteristics, there is strong evidence that a desirable form
of recreation is in progress. No specific formula for measuring the worth of a recreational activity is advocated.
Recreation depends on one’s state of mind and attitude toward an activity.
Importance of Recreation
1. Physical Health. A large part of recreation is physical in nature, like some forms of games, sports, and
dances that are essential to physical fitness.
2. Psychological Health. Leisure and recreation can relax and recharge the overworked individual.
Frustration is a result of mental stress. Satisfying and worthwhile activities that relax a tires mind during
spare time can overcome frustration. Recreation also offers opportunities to develop and enhance skills, as
well as creativity.
3. Social Well-being. Recreation can be a source of happiness and satisfaction. A happy person can easily
adjust to his or her peers, subordinates, and superiors. As social force, recreation is a means of establishing
unity among individuals. It develops a well-rounded personality. It also helps restrain or control
delinquency, lessens (if not totally eliminates) the problems of community disorganization, and offers varied
opportunities for better social relations.
4. Emotional Stability. People who balance work and recreation find their life fulfilling and their existing
meaningful.
