SA DRILL CORE REFERENCE LIBRARY –

TOUR & ACTIVITIES

Introduction
SA Drill Core Reference Library provides a service to the mining, petroleum and geoscience
industries. Representative core samples are stored in the library (usually ¼ is cut longitudinally)
that can be reviewed by exploration companies before they undertake further exploration. The
services provided by the facility, however, extend to far more than a storage facility for drill cores.
In addition, the SARIG (South Australian Resources Industry Geoserver) website allows free
library research before very expensive fieldwork.
Your visit to the facility will give you the opportunity to observe core samples and testing
instrumentation;
• the variety of rock cores
• the drill core racks & the specialised forklift
• the HyLogger
• answers to some of the questions prepared by students
You will need to take notes during the tour and record the answers to the prepared questions,
which will be included in your report.

Deliverables
1. The first page of this assignment i.e. the Cover Sheet and the Marking Scheme.
2. A Short Technical Report comprising;
• An introduction
• Reflections of the day including, but not limited to; what was interesting, what you
learnt etc.
• Responses to at least five (5) questions presented by students
• Conclusion that should include how this site visit may benefit your studies and
future career in civil engineering

This needs to be between 400 – 450 words (but no more)

Your report must comply with the document How To_Short Technical Report.pdf and the
student checklist at the end of that document.
