ASE344:HELICOPTER THEORY AND AERODYNAMICS

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: define and become familiarize on major helicopter components, characteristics and
configurations.

CO2 :: illustrate and familiar with major issues involved in forward flight rotor theory

CO3 :: observe with special concept of hovering and maneuvering of helicopter

CO4 :: recite the basic ideas of performance and associated stability problems of helicopter

CO5 :: observe the concepts of ideal rotor blade theory , stall and drag

CO6 :: discuss and understand the theory behind VTOL, STOL and its stability

Unit I
Introduction to helicopter : Helicopter configuration, specifics of helicopter, articulated rotor
system, effect of cyclic pitch, swash plate and rotor system, semi rigid rotor and rigid rotor, concept
of hovering, blade element theory, elementary numerical solutions
Unit II
Performance of hovering and climbing : Introduction, Rapid performance in hover, equivalent
chord, Optimum hovering of rotor, induced torque, profile drag torque, performance equation and
optimum rotor design, ground effect, numerical solutions
Unit III
Performance of horizontal flight : Flapping and lag hinge, steady hover, equilibrium in horizontal
blade, flapping blade and spring mass concept, induced velocity, blade element angle of attack,
flapping coefficient-torque coefficient, drag coefficient, profile drag, decelerating torque, induced drag
to lift ratio, numerical solutions
Unit IV
Forward flight : Performance equation, drag lift ration, parasite drag coefficient, climb drag lift ratio,
profile drag to lift ration, drag lift ratio chart, estimation of profile power, parasite power, numerical
solutions
Unit V
Helicopter Blade stall : Introduction of blade stall region, power losses, means of delaying of blade
stall, reduction in fuselage drag, reduction in blade loading, blade twist angle, calculating angle of
attack at retreating tip, consideration of stall loss in performance, numerical solutions
Unit VI
Helicopter stability and control : Introduction of rotor stability trim and term, static stability and
dynamic stability of helicopter, rotor static stability, stability in hover, dynamic stability, dynamic
stability reduction, stability in forward flight, dynamic stability in forward flight, numerical solutions
