Why Students Shouldn’t Nicotine

Introduction

A. Gain Attention - A picture of a boy whose lungs collapsed due to vaping

B. Show audience relevance to arouse interest - If any of you do nicotine and don’t plan

to quit, I have a few words on why you shouldn’t do nicotine.

C. Credibility - I used to have a bestfriend who would vape and she vaped so much that

she started having problems with her health. Her teeth were starting to decay and her

lungs also collapsed. She was in the hospital for about 2 weeks.

D. State the purpose of your speech (thesis) - Today I will be talking about the problems

of using e-cigs or vaping and it’s side effects

E. Main points - I will be sharing how doing nicotine can cause several problems with your

body and health.

Transition - Now that you have an idea of what I am going to be speaking about,

let's go into how nicotine makes you become an addict.

I. Body -

A. According to Smokefree.gov, students shouldn’t nicotine because “ Nicotine can lead to

addiction, which puts you at risk of becoming a lifelong smoker and exposing you to the

many harmful chemicals in tobacco. These chemicals cause cancer and harm almost

every organ in your body. Teens are especially sensitive to nicotine’s addictive effects

because their brains are still developing and this makes it easier to get hooked. Using

nicotine at your age can also rewire your brain to become more easily addicted to other

drugs. Nicotine can have other long-lasting effects on your brain development, making it

harder for you to concentrate, learn, and control your impulses.”

B. According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse published on January 14,2021 said,

“Tobacco and vaping devices contain nicotine, an ingredient that can lead to addiction

which is why so many people who smoke or vape find it difficult to quit. Both tobacco

and vaping devices contain other harmful chemicals; burning tobacco can create these

chemicals and vaping devices turn chemicals and flavorings into mist that combines with

synthetic nicotine.”

Transition - The next thing I will talk about is the effects that nicotine has on your body.

Body -

A. Teenagers who use e-cigs or vapes are exposing themselves to cancer-causing

toxins. They inflame mouth cells that can promote gum disease. This gum

damage can affect your teeth and cause you to lose them.

B. According to Adam Felman, published on January 11, 2018, said “When humans

are exposed to nicotine, it increases their heart rate, heart muscle oxygen

consumption rate, and heart stroke volume”. These are known as pharmacologic

effects. People who regularly consume nicotine and then suddenly stop

experience withdrawal symptoms, which may include:

- Cravings

- a sense of emptiness

- Anxiety

- Depression

- Moodiness

- Irritability

- difficulty focusing or paying attention

The American Heart Association says that “nicotine consumed from smoking tobacco is

one of the hardest substances to quit. It is considered to be at least as hard as quitting

heroin”.

According to the Center of Disease Control published on December 16, 2020 stated that

“Nicotine can harm the developing adolescent brain. The brain keeps developing until

about age 25.Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control

attention, learning, mood, and impulse control. Each time a new memory is created or a

new skill is learned, stronger connections – or synapses – are built between brain cells.

Young people’s brains build synapses faster than adult brains. Nicotine changes the way

these synapses are formed. Using nicotine in adolescence may also increase risk for

future addiction to other drugs.”

Transition - Finally, I would like to talk about why teens shouldn’t nicotine.

Body -

A. The use of e-cigs/vaping has become popular in today’s society because it has

been said that it is “healthier” for people then cigarettes. They might not be as

bad as cigarettes, but they are still harmful to your body.

B. Transition - Now that you know the dangers of using e-cigs/vapes, it is time

to wrap up my speech.

Conclusion - As I end my speech, I hope that you can use this to help others and

possibly yourself from the harmful effects of e-cigs/vaping.
