Summary of the Poem:

The theme of the poem is romance. The poem is about a "phase" of love for a
couple written from a male’s perspective. By using imagery and symbolism to
compare himself to the colours that are seen all around his girl to send his love
spiritually. He is saying that even though he is not there in person, he is still there
spiritually to support his lover and help her; just get her through a stressful day until
they meet again.

Explanation of Stanzas:

First Stanza

 He reminds her that he is the red in the rose, the flowers that he sends to her
within his busy schedule. He jokes about portraying himself as the grey-
coloured ghost that hides behind her closet door as a love language.

Second Stanza

 Whenever she is outside at the field, he reminds her that he is the green in
the grass below her feet. And whenever she looks over her porch, he is the
blue between the horizon and the rooftops.

Third Stanza

 When she wrote something in her notebook, he is the black in the letters that
she remembers. And he is the orange in the clouds, the colour that she
dreams about.

Fourth Stanza

 He will always be there for her, in mind and heart, as well as being present.
Inspiration:

The inspiration of “The Technicolour Phase” comes from the lyrics of 2010’s pop
music. Lyrics are poetry that is intended to be heard, and comprehended, in real-
time. From Taylor Swift “Red” to Halsey “Colours”, all these extraordinary lyricists
express their sensations of the heart and the head in a manner that is so effortless,
bona fide, and concise. They use striking, bright language to make the lyric to be
more memorable and fathomable. Colours are used in numerous songs as an
approach to impart an idea, address a person or an emotion.

Reason:

People see colours in everything around them, every second of the day. But, do they
at any point stop to consider the effect each of those colours on them? A long period
of biological conditioning has created a certain relationship between colours and
objects or feelings. Understanding these affiliations will give you a shortcut to
people’s hearts and souls, inciting a particular feeling and possibly behaviour.
Emotions are considerably more influential than rational thoughts dependent on facts
and figures. Applying colour symbolism will make life more eloquent, the same goes
for the poem.

The Overall Experience of Writing the Poem:

I enjoyed reading other people’s works, but I disdained writing poetry myself. I was
never good at clarifying my ideas clearly and arranging the main ideas for the reader.
However, after recalling all the great lyrics I had encountered. I took them as
inspiration to assist me to write my poem “The Technicolour Phase”. It was enjoyable
to play with all the colours and trying to coordinate them with objects from my field of
vision. In the progress, I realized we should not take colours for granted. Colours are
a beautiful sense that we do not think much of. But some people would sob tears of
euphoria if they saw what we saw.
