The Following Are The Steps in Constructing Perpendicular Bisector of A Segment Using A Compass and A Straightedge

This document provides instructions for constructing basic geometric figures using a compass and straightedge. It includes steps to construct a perpendicular bisector of a segment, a bisector of an angle, perpendicular lines, and parallel lines. Examples are provided to illustrate each construction. Exercises at the end ask students to match constructions to diagrams and construct specific figures applying the techniques.

CONSTRUCTING BASIC GEOMETRIC FIGURES USING COMPASS AND STRAIGHT EDGE

Compass is a tool used to draw a circle while a straightedge is any object used to draw a
straight line.

Compass straightedge or ruler

A. Steps in Constructing Perpendicular Bisector of a Segment

The following are the steps in constructing perpendicular bisector of a segment using a compass
and a straightedge:

1. Draw a horizontal segment.

2. Place the point of the compass at any endpoint of the segment and make the opening more
than half of the length of that segment. Draw an arc, which is less than the semi- circle on the upper
and lower part of the segment.
3. Repeat step 2 on the other endpoint of the segment without changing the opening of the
compass.
4. Connect the points formed by the arcs.

Illustrative Example 1: Constructing Perpendicular Bisector of a Segment

Step 1. Draw segment ̅̅̅̅

𝐴𝐵

2. Place the point of the compass at A and make the opening

more than one half of 𝐴𝐵̅̅̅̅. Draw an arc which is less than the semi-
circle.

3. Repeat step 2 but this time place the point of the compass at B
and let the arcs intersect at P and Q.

4. Connect points P and Q. ̅̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅.

𝑃𝑄 𝑖s the perpendicular bisector of 𝐴𝐵

B. Steps in Constructing Bisector of an Angle

The following are the steps in constructing a bisector of an angle using a compass and a straightedge:
1. Draw an angle.
2. Place the point of the compass at the vertex and draw an arc intersecting its sides.
3. Place the point of the compass at the intersection of the arc and the side of the angle and draw
an arc. Then, with the same opening, place the point of the compass at the other intersection of the arc

1
and the side of the angle and draw another arc. You will notice that the two newly formed arcs intersect
at a certain point.
4. Connect the point of intersection of the two arcs to the vertex of the angle. The figure formed
bisects the angle.
Illustrative Example 2: Constructing Bisector of an Angle

1. Draw ∠A.

2. Place the point of the compass at A and draw an arc intersecting

its sides at B and C respectively.

3. Place the point of the compass at B and draw an arc. Then, with
the same opening, place the point of the compass at C and draw an
arc intersecting the other arc at point P

4. Connect points A and P. ⃗⃗⃗⃗⃗

𝐴𝑃 bisects ∠A.

A. Steps in Constructing Perpendicular Lines

Steps on constructing a line perpendicular to a line from a point not on the line:

1. Construct a line and another point which is not on the line.

2. Construct an arc from the point not on the line passing through the line. Mark the points of
intersection of the arc and the line.
3. From each point of intersection, construct another arc. You will notice that the two arcs formed
from each point intersect at each other.
4. Connect the point of intersection of the two arcs to the other point (step 1). The segment formed
is perpendicular to the line.

Illustrative Example 3: Constructing Perpendicular Lines

How to construct a line perpendicular to a line from a point not on the line:

⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗ , and a point, C not on 𝐴𝐵

1. Draw a line, 𝐴𝐵 ⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗

2. Point the steel point of the compass at C. Open ends of the

compass more than the distance from C to ⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐴𝐵 and label points D and
E.

3. Place the steel point at D with a radius greater than one-half the
distance between D and E, mark an arc below 𝐴𝐵 ⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗ . With E as center
having the same radius, cut the arc. Label the point of intersection P.

̅̅̅̅ is perpendicular to
4. Using a straightedge, draw a segment P to C. 𝐶𝑃
⃡⃗⃗⃗⃗
𝐴𝐵.

2
A. Steps in Constructing Parallel lines
These are the step on constructing a line parallel to another line from a point not on the line.

1. Draw a line segment

2. Draw a transverse segment through a point and across the line at an angle forming the
point where it intersects the line. With the compass width set about to half the distance
between the point of intersection of two segments and the point not on the line, place the
compass on the point of intersection, and draw an arc across both lines.
3. Without adjusting the compass width, move the compass to the point not on the line and
draw a similar arc to the one in step 2.
4. Set compass width to the distance where the lower arc crosses the two lines.
5. Move the compass to where the upper arc crosses the transverse line and draw an arc
across the upper arc forming another point of intersection.
6. Draw a straight line through points the two points.

Illustrative Example 4: Constructing Parallel lines

How a line parallel to a line from a point not on the line:

1. Draw a line segment AB and a point C not on the line.

2. Draw a transverse segment through C and across AB at an

angle forming the point D where it intersects the line AB. The
exact angle is not important. With the compass width set about to
half the distance between C and D, place the point on D, and
draw an ac across both lines.

3. Without adjusting the compass width, move the compass to C

and draw a similar arc to the one in step 2.

4. Set compass width to the distance where the lower arc crosses
the two lines.

5. Move the compass to where the upper arc crosses the

transverse line and draw an arc across the upper arc forming
point E.

6. Draw a straight line through points C and E. Line AB is parallel

to line CE.
