Department of Mahtematics and Statistics University of Jaffna LEVEL 1S (2018/2019) Statistics For Computing I - CSC105S3 Tutorial - 03

This document contains 10 practice problems related to probability and statistics concepts like the normal distribution, binomial distribution, and exponential distribution. The problems cover calculating probabilities, finding mean and standard deviation, and determining cutoff values. Example questions include finding the probability of getting a certain number of defective disks in a box, determining the average number of defective items, and calculating the percentage of people above or below a weight or score.

DEPARTMENT OF MAHTEMATICS AND STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY OF JAFFNA
LEVEL 1S (2018/2019)
Statistics for Computing I – CSC105S3
Tutorial – 03
1) Suppose that 24% of companies in a certain sector of the economy have announced plans to
expand in the next year (and the other 76% will not). In a sample of twenty companies chosen at
random drawn from this population, find the probability that the number of companies which
have announced plans to expand in the next year will be
a) precisely three
b) fewer than three
c) three or more
d) precisely five

2) “NoRisk” Disks manufactures floppy disks and packages them in boxes of 10. The company
believes that 5% of their latest batches of disks are defective. Assume that each box contains a
random selection from a huge batch of disks.
a) What is the probability that a customer will have at least one defective disk in a box of 10?
Express your answer to 4 decimal places.
b) Recently, a customer claimed that he bought a box in which all disks were faculty. How
likely is it that would occur? Express your answer to 4 decimal places.
c) On average, how many defectives are expected to be in a box?

3) Patients arrive at a hospital accident and emergency department at a rate of 6 per hour.
a) Find the probability that, during any 90 minutes period, the number of patients arriving at the
hospital accident and emergency department is
i) exactly 7
ii) at least 10
b) If a patient arrives at 11.30 a.m, Find the probability that the next patient arrives before 11.45
a.m.

4) The weight, 𝑊 grams, of a bag of sugar may be assumed to be normally distributed with a mean
of 1018 and a standard deviation of 10 .
a) Determine the probability that:
i) 𝑊 is less than 1025 ;
ii) 𝑊 is greater than 1015 but less than 1030 .

b) A box contains 24 such bags of sugar. Assuming that these 24 bags may be regarded as a
random sample, determine the probability that their mean weight exceeds 1015 grams.

5) Suppose the marks for an examination are normally distributed with mean 60 and standard
deviation 10.
a) Find the Z-score of a student who got 70 marks.
b) What percentage of students has performed better than him in that particular examination?
c) If the top 15% of the students receive grade A, find the minimum marks to receive grade A.
d) If the lower 10% of the students receive grade F and fail the examination, find the marks
required for a pass.

6) The time (in hours) required to repair a machine is an exponential distributed random variable
1
with parameter 𝜆 = .
2

a) What is the probability that a repair time exceeds 2 hours;

b) The conditional probability that a repair takes at least 10 hours, given that its duration
exceeds 9 hours?

7) The literacy rate for a nation measures the proportion of people age 15 and over who can read
and write. The literacy rate for women in Afghanistan is 12%. Let X be the number of Afghani
women you ask until one says that she is literate.
a) What is the probability distribution of X?
b) What is the probability that you ask five women before one says she is literate?
c) What is the probability that you must ask ten women?
d) Find the (i) mean and (ii) standard deviation of X.

a) A supermarket chain sells its „own-brand‟ label instant coffee in packets containing 200 gm of
coffee granules. The packets are filled by a machine which is set to dispense fills of 200 gm
If fills are normally distributed, about a mean of 200 gm and with a standard deviation of 7
gm, find the number of packets out of a consignment of 1,000 packets that:
i) contain more than 215 gm
ii) contain less than 195 gm
iii) contain between 190 to 210 gm
b) The supermarket chain decides to withdraw all packets with less than a certain weight (𝑤) of
coffee. As a result, 40 packets which were in the consignment of 1,000 packets are
withdrawn. Find the weight 𝑤 for withdrawing packets?

9)
a) The number of customers entering a store in a day is believed to be well modeled by a
normal distribution with mean 5000 and standard deviation 800. Calculate the probability
that the number of customers entering the store in day will be less than 4000. How many
days of February 2009 would be expected to have less than 4000 customers?

b) A company packages sugar in bags labeled as 1kg bags. The actual weights of the bags are
normally distributed with mean 1010g and standard deviation 5g. Compute the probability
that a randomly sampled bag weights less than 1000g. And find the weight 𝑤 such that 25%
of bags weight more than 𝑤.

c) According to government reports, the heights of adult male are normally distributed with a
mean of 150cm and standard deviation of 15cm. If a clothing manufacture wants to limit his
market to the central 80% of the adult male population, what range of heights should be
target?

10) The weight, in grams, of beans in a tin is normally distributed with mean µ and standard
deviation 7.8. Given that 10% of tins contain less than 200𝑔, find
a) the value of µ,
b) the percentage of tins that contain more than 225 𝑔 of beans.
The machine settings are adjusted so that the weight, in grams, of beans in a tin is normally
distributed with mean 205 and standard deviation 𝜎.
c) Given that 98% of tins contain between 200𝑔 and 210 𝑔 find the value of 𝜎.
