Department of Mahtematics and Statistics University of Jaffna LEVEL 1S (2018/2019) Statistics For Computing I - CSC105S3 Tutorial - 02

This document contains 5 problems involving probability distributions of discrete and continuous random variables. Problem 1 involves finding properties of discrete random variables such as their probabilities, expected values, and variances. Problem 2 similarly involves finding properties of discrete random variables defined by probability distributions. Problem 3 defines a continuous random variable with a probability density function and asks to find its cumulative distribution function, expected value, variance, and probabilities. Problem 4 defines another continuous random variable and asks to plot its probability density function, find its cumulative distribution function, and calculate a probability. Problem 5 defines two more continuous random variables and asks to find their cumulative distribution functions, expected values, variances, and probabilities.

𝑥 -1 0 1 2 3
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 0.2 𝑎 0.1 𝑎 0.2

where 𝑎 is a constant.
a) Find the value of 𝑎
b) Write down 𝐸(𝑋)
c) Find 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑋)
d) The random variable 𝑌 = 6 − 2𝑋
i) Find 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑌)
ii) Calculate 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 𝑌)
02. A biased die with six faces is rolled. The discrete random variable 𝑋 represents the score on the
uppermost face. The probability distribution of 𝑋 is shown in the table below.
𝑥 1 2 3 4 5 6
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥) 𝑎 𝑎 𝑎 𝑏 𝑏 0.3

a) Given that 𝐸(𝑋) = 4.2 find the value of 𝑎 and the value of 𝑏.
b) Show that 𝐸(𝑋 ) = 20.4.
c) Find 𝑉𝑎𝑟(5 − 3𝑋).
A biased die with five faces is rolled. The discrete random variable 𝑌 represents the score which is
uppermost. The cumulative distribution function of 𝑌 is shown in the table below.
𝑦 1 2 3 4 5
𝐹(𝑦) 1 2 3𝑘 4𝑘 5𝑘
10 10
d) Find the value of 𝑘.
e) Find the probability distribution of 𝑌.
Each die is rolled once. The scores on the two dice are independent.
f) Find the probability that the sum of the two scores equals 2.
