Acid Base Simulation Strong Vs Weak

This document provides instructions for an activity using the PhET Acid-Base Solutions simulation to teach students about acids and bases. Students will first review acid-base theories and pH concepts. They will then work in pairs to complete the PhET simulation. This will include recording data about different substances to identify acids and bases and determine their relative strengths based on factors like pH and concentrations of H3O+ or OH- ions. Students will rank acids and bases according to these factors and describe differences between strong and weak varieties. Sketches are also to be created showing particulate views of strong and weak acids or bases. Practice problems will then be assigned.

Introduction: Acids and Bases

SAP-9:
Topic 8.1and 8.2: Identify an appropriate theory, definition, or mathematical relationship
to solve a problem.
Many of my students have never had a chemistry course. I have to start from the ground
up with them.
Begin with a discussion of acid-base theory: Arrhenius and Bronsted-Lowry.
Review pH as it relates to acids and bases.
Assign the PhET Simulation: Acid and Base Solutions. Students will work in pairs.
After students complete the PhET simulation, teach pH and pOH calculations.
Assign appropriate practice problems.
Acid-Base PhET Simulation

PhET Acid-Base Solutions

Google PhET – select play with simulations – select chemistry from the menu on the left –
open the acid-base simulation.
For this simulation, HA means an acid, B means base. H+ and H3O+ both mean the same thing ---
two different ways to show the acid dissociation.
Complete the following table using the Introduction simulation. Do not perform the conductivity
test for water.
Substance pH pH from Test Number of Light Length of Light
Strip Rays Rays(S, M, L)
Water XXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX

Using the My Solution Simulation:

Acids
1. Complete the following table.
a. Leave the concentration at the default setting.
b. Leave the Strength switch on weak.
c. Move the strength slider all the way to the left. It will be on weaker for the
weakest strength.
d. Move slider to the center for the medium strength.
e. Move the Strength switch to strong.
f. Move slider to stronger for highest strength.
For Acid Concentration 0.010 M
Acid Strength # HA molecules # H3O+ ions pH (Using Probe)
Weakest

Medium

Highest

1. Rank the acids from least number of HA in solution to greatest number of HA.

2
Acid-Base PhET Simulation

2. Rank the acids from lowest pH to highest pH.

3. Rank the acids from least amount of H3O+ formed to greatest amount of H3O+ formed.

4. What is the most noticeable difference between strong acids and weak acids when
dissolved in water?

5. Sketch two beakers: one showing the particulate level for a strong acid and the other
showing the particulate level for a weak acid. Show the hydronium ions and acid anion.
Water molecules do not need to be shown.

Bases
For Base Concentration 0.010 M
Base Strength # B formula units # OH- ions pH (Using Probe)

1. Rank the bases from least number of B in solution to greatest number of B.

2. Rank the bases from lowest pH to highest pH.

3. Rank the bases from least amount of OH- formed to greatest amount of OH- formed.
