EE 2111 - Applied Electricity and Electronics

Submit the hard copy on or before 1st of march 2021

1. Prepare notes for - Principles of operation, Constructional Details, Ideal Transformer and
Practical Transformer, Losses, Transformer Test, Efficiency and Regulation Calculations.

2. Answer for the questions

1. a. Explain how a basic transformer is constructed (Give main necessary parts).

b. A single phase transformer has 100 turns on the primary and 50 turns on the secondary.
The no load current is 4A at a 0.3 power factor lagging. When the secondary current if
280A at 0.8 power factor lagging what is the,
a. Primary current
b. Power factor for primary and secondary
c. What is known as ‘all day efficiency’ of a transformer?
d. A 150kVA rated lighting transformer has 4kW of loss equally divided between copper
and iron loss. During a day transformer on full load for 5 hours and half load for 4 hours.
Rest of the day transformer is not operated with negligible output.
Calculate the ‘all day efficiency’ of the transformer. HNDE -2019

2. a. Write four advantages of auto transformer than doubled-wound transformer.

b. A 5 kVA single phase transformer having turns ratio of 15:1 is connected 5 kV supply.
Neglecting losses Calculate,

i). The primary current

ii). The full load secondary current

iii). The minimum load resistance that gives the full load kVA

c. Draw transformer equivalent circuit diagram referred to primary side.

d. The total loss present in the 25 kVA practical transformer is 1000 W. Find the efficiency at
full load and half load for 0.7 power factor lagging. HNDE-2018

3. a. What are the three characteristics of an ideal transformer compared with a practical
transformer
b. An ideal 30KVA transformer has 400 turns on the primary winding and 50 turns on the
secondary winding. Primary is connected to 3000V, 50Hz supply. Calculate,
a. Primary and secondary current
b. Secondary voltage.
c. In a 50KVA practical transformer, the iron loss is 400W and full load copper loss
is 750W. Find the efficiency at full load and at half load for 0.8 power factor
lagging. HNDE-2017

4. a. An ideal transformer has 200 turns on the primary winding and 40 turns on the secondary
winding. The primary winding is connected to 2400V, 50Hz supply. Calculate the primary
and secondary current on full load and the maximum core flux.

b. Explain three types of losses in practical transformer.

c. A 30 kVA, 2400/120 V, 50 Hz transformer has a high voltage winding resistance of 0.2Ω and
a leakage reactance of 0.32 Ω. The low voltage winding resistance is 0.055 Ω and the
leakage reactance is 0.022 Ω. Values of magnetizing components are negligible.
i). Draw equivalent circuit diagram referred to high voltage side
ii). Find total impedance in the diagram. HNDE-2016
