MODULE 1
ARNIS OVERVIEW AND BASIC POSITIONS

Assessment 1

Name: Mallari, Rachelle M. Course and Section: BEEd

2A

Part 1. In a short essay, write the value of Arnis to our physical fitness and
national identity as Filipinos. Use extra sheet if needed. (20 points)

Arnis, also known as Kali or Ekrima/Escrima is considered as the Philippines’

National Sport and Martial Art developed by the indigenous populations in the
Philippines, who created various weaponry to use for self-defense. Today, Arnis has its
significant mark in the Filipino culture as a sport of our cultural heritage and as a leisure
activity. It is also a sport characterized by the use of swinging and twirling movements,
accompanied by striking, thrusting and parrying techniques for defense and offense. In
line with this, Arnis truly has its value in our physical fitness and national identity as
Filipinos.

Arnis aims to teach us discipline and control. It gives us full body work out that
helps us improve our body’s stamina, balance, speed, strength and flexibility. Not only
with our physical body, Arnis also helps us spiritually and emotionally, it helps our minds
to meditate, eliminating bad energy and put us in a good mood while we execute this
sport. It also one of the best ways to burn your calories without you realizing that you
are losing weight. It’s best to do Arnis especially in times like this where we only do is sit
in front of our computers. It is also good for self-defense, you can protect yourself in
times of crisis when someone wants to harm you. With the number of various crimes
that’s in the news today, it is better to know this method of Martial Arts.

As I’ve said earlier, Arnis has its significant mark in the Filipino culture. It plays a
major role in the acknowledgement of Filipino indigenous people who pioneered the use
of weaponry in the earlier era. It also had been utilized as defense system of our Filipino
ancestors to fight off foreign threats and invaders of our land.

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved Republic Act Number

9850, An Act declaring Arnis as the National Martial Art and Sport of the Philippines. It
is an abiding policy to infuse patriotism, nationalism and appreciation of the roles of our
national heroes and symbols in the historical development of our country. Fortunately,
this sport is still on the line to be known by the new generations up until now. In the
section 4 of the RA 9850, The Department of Education, the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts, and the Philippine Sports Commission shall promulgate the
necessary rules and regulations to carry out the provisions of this Act. I think it is a good
news that Arnis have been continuously implemented in physical education and that
way, it will never be forgotten in our own cultural history.
