Unit Description
The unit provides the knowledge and skills required to design and monitor systems
with appropriate vibration properties. Students will have the opportunity to
investigate the application of theoretical knowledge on dynamics and process
control to a variety of situations related to the response to harmonic excitation,
general forced response, multiple degree of freedom systems, design for vibration
suppression, distributed parameter systems, acoustics and noise barriers. Unit also
includes practical component related to vibration testing of mechanical systems,
experimental modal analysis and application of finite element methods.

This unit is reliant on online materials. Students must have access to a reliable high-
speed broadband connection and a scanner.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit, a student should be able to:

1. Apply appropriate practical, software and problem-solving skills to analyse

the vibration behavior of Single and Multi-degree of freedom systems
including linear, torsional and transverse systems.
2. Design a mechanical system with required vibration or acoustic properties.
3. Execute vibration testing to determine the presence of faults in mechanical
systems.
4. Analyse natural frequencies of bodies and systems.

Assessment Overview
Assessment title Volume Value (of total Related
mark) outcomes
1. Four practical 1,200 - 2,400 35% 1–4
reports (3 pages words per
each) report
2. Two Tests 120 minutes 50 % 1–4
each
3. Online quiz 90 minutes 15 % 3-4

Further details of all assessment items will be given in the workshops and through
Learnline as these items are made available to students.
Assessment submission

CDU College of Engineering, IT & Environment - Unit Information: ENG534 3

Submissions for these assessment items should be made via Learnline in PDF
format by the due date. Submissions in any other format will not receive any
feedback, and they may not be able to be marked.
Submission links will be placed on Learnline under "Submit Here" in the Assessment
section as the assessments are given to students.

Mid-semester test and Final Exam

The two class tests will take place at the Casuarina campus. External student living
80km outside of Darwin will be reminded to find a suitable invigilator for the mid-
semester test

Teaching and Learning approach

How the unit will run
Students will learn through individual work, and experiential and case-based
learning. The content and various learning activities will be delivered through
Learnline supplemented with video materials from internal class lectures. Student
learning is paced and guided by a weekly study guide available on Learnline. Each
module is divided into weeks, and each week is subdivided into the following
sections.
Lecture: This section presents the topic covered in the week. The topic is
presented as PDF files containing the POWERPOINT slides used in the teaching
session and the videos of the lecture.
Tutorial Exercise: This section presents some questions related to the topic
covered. It is recommended you answer the questions to test your
understanding of the topic. The tutorial exercise does not carry any marks.
The unit also has lab-based sessions that focus on your learning's practical aspects
(see learning schedule). Videos with instructions for each practical are provided as a
part of the material of the week and according to the learning schedule (see below).
The collected data from previous practicals are shared with external students to
complete the lab report.
The lecturer's role
In addition to the formal role of facilitating lectures, tutorials and practicals and
marking assessments, the lecturer will also:
Make regular announcements as and when necessary, using the
announcement tool; ensure you check Announcements on a regular basis.
Give feedback on marked work; please pay attention to the feedback as it
may be useful for subsequent tasks and contact the lecturer if unclear.
Be available for queries through email, phone or discussion forum; as
mentioned under Staff Contacts, the preferred method of communicating is
email.
Student's participation

CDU College of Engineering, IT & Environment - Unit Information: ENG534 4

For maximum benefit, both internal and external students are expected to carry out
the relevant readings before the lectures and attempt the tutorial questions before
tutorials.
Although there are no minimum attendance requirements, internal students are
expected to attend all lectures and tutorials.
Laboratories are compulsory for internal students.
You are also expected to engage with others through the discussion board and
other collaborative activities organised by the lecturer
You are expected to complete all assessment tasks by the due date unless an
extension has been requested and granted.
You are expected to spend between 12 hours a week for this unit, including contact
time, individual study, collaborative activities and assessment task completion.

Engineers Australia Graduate Attributes

University education provides the learning base upon which competence for a
professional engineering career is built. It is important that the education provides
the graduate with generic attributes as outlined by Engineers Australia. Details of
the Engineers Australia graduate attributes addressed in this unit can be found at
the Learnline site Engineering Central – Engineers Australia – Engineers Australia
Graduate Attributes.
