Assignment 2. Documentary Film Analysis

C.S. Lewis was skeptical of scientism, not science itself. He believed scientism could corrupt science by pursuing power and control over people, rather than just knowledge. Lewis explained that science can function like a religion by giving life meaning for some. He also said science can encourage credulity, or a lack of skepticism, in the same way magic does, if its claims are accepted without questioning.

technology consumers not to be enchained and free from the limits of technological thinking.

There is on the other hand, a substantial difference. Martin Heidegger believes that technology

questions:

1. Why was C.S. Lewis very much sceptic and critic of scientism? Was he against
science?

C.S. Lewis was against scientism and not science itself. He had much interest in scientism, the
use of methods of science to explain and control almost every part of human lives. He thought
that science could be corrupted and that people can use science not only for the knowledge, but
also to pursue science for the main purpose of power, power over the world and power over other
people.

2. How did C.S. Lewis explain the following?

2.1 science as religion

This is the first way Lewis explained that science and magic are similar; he said that they both
can function as a religion. He believed that an individual can look at the world at a different
view, thus can make them believe in something, that there’s more to life than just our everyday
lives. He believed that science can be an alternative religion, and just like religion, it can give life
a sense of meaning.

2.2 science as credulity

The second way science and magic are similar is that they both encourage the lack of skepticism.
