Film Viewing
Instructions: watch the movie Medicine Man (1992). Then, write a 300- 500-word reaction
paper focused on the questions below. Cite scenes and instances in the movie to support
your answers.
1. How does biodiversity provide for people's medical needs?
2. How do researches that utilize biodiversity affect the community?
3. Why are the cultural traditions of the community important in consuming or using
the goods sourced from biodiversity?
4. How do business and development affect biodiversity?
5. What is your take on the value of biodiversity for health and medicine? What are
the parameters to distinguish the good and bad ways of utilizing biodiversity in this
context?
Biological diversity defined as the existence of many kinds of animals and animals in an
environment, it is commonly referred as biodiversity. In our daily lives, we often depend on the
biodiversity in which ways that are not always appreciated. Fresh water, food and fuel
resources are the products of the ecosystem that the human health depends on. Hence,
biodiversity plays an important role in all species especially in health and medicine. Biophysical
diversity of microorganisms sustains the needs for biological, health and pharmacological
sciences. As an example, in the film “The Medical Man”, Dr. Campbell created a medicine for
cancer using the bromeliad (flower came from the ecosystem). Therefore, loss in biodiversity
may limit discoveries of potential treatment on any health diseases/health problems.
Culture and tradition of the community serves as a basis in using what we have in
biodiversity. In the film “The Medicine Man”, it was stated that the Indian or the tribe living in
the forest does not experience diseases because they are ingesting the bromeliad flower. It is
also stated that ingesting it is one of their culture. So, as Dr. Campbell creating the cure for
cancer, he uses the culture and tradition of the tribe as his basis. Therefore, culture and
tradition create a pathway through human health and medicine. Without the opportunity to
place the cultural values upon goods might result to negative impact on human health as well
as human well-being
Nowadays, the earth was keep developing. Buildings, highways, houses and other
business infrastructure were built on the land as well in the ocean, wherein our ecosystem was
the first affected. As a matter of fact, everywhere in the world, there is deforestation, climate
change, overexploitation and such are threats that affects biodiversity. As the world keeps on
developing and human beings keep on thinking about business, there are also consequences on
the loss and damage in biodiversity, wherein human health is the first one to be affected.
In my personal view, the use of biodiversity for health and medicine plays a vital role in
health care wherein the majority of world’s population depends on the traditional medicine. It
is a component that the researches and paramedic used in the formulation of the traditional
medicine. As an illustration, traditional medicine comes from the plants and animals or the
natural products that are actually came from our ecosystem (biodiversity). On the other hand,
the medicinal plant (a traditional medicine) is one of the common medication tools that the
community relies on aside from synthetic medicine.
