Headmistress’s Newsletter

Issue 140 16th April 2021

Welcome Back

All staff were delighted to welcome everyone back on Wednesday to our

Summer Term (although the weather was decidedly ‘wintery’!). We are all
looking forward to a term where we can hopefully undertake some of our
usual school activities. Although After-School Care and Clubs are not
operating, we will decide whether it is possible to offer these later in the
term – dependent on progress through the government’s ‘road map’ and our
own risk assessments. The School Calendar went home to all families last
term and I am sure you have already noted the dates for our traditional
summer events, such as the visit to Joss Bay, Sports Day and Speeches &
Prizegiving. It will be wonderful if these events can indeed take place…

Much media coverage has highlighted that children will need to ‘catch-up’
after their extended periods of remote schooling. Our assessments show
that Bronte children have continued to make good progress throughout the
last 12 months, and our focus this term will continue to be both wellbeing
and assessment of any ‘gaps’ that may have developed. Class Pupil Progress
Meetings will be held next week where I discuss each individual child with
Mrs Cochrane and the class teacher. This meeting forms the basis of ongoing
targets and planning for the term.

This term also saw the arrival of Miss Maclean as our Head of Art, and some
photos from her lessons are featured later in this newsletter. We are also
pleased to welcome Jessica, Octavia, Shay and William to our Kindergarten
class, Martha to our Reception class and Sophia to Year 5. I know that they,
and their families, will be warmly welcomed into the Bronte community.

Reading in Year 2

The year 2 classroom was turned into a

library on Wednesday as children started a
brand new term with some brand new
books. They had plenty of wonderful new
titles to choose from and we have been
enjoying them both independently and as a
whole class during the end of the day DEAR
sessions (Drop Everything and Read!).

HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Children across the school have this week been

learning about the fascinating and busy life of His
Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
All classes wrote and submitted a message of
condolence to Her Majesty the Queen.

This is from Year 2, who are hoping that the Queen

will read it and that it will make her smile - what a
thoughtful class.

Year 3 also spent some time learning about the royal family, studying the family tree and working
out the relationships between each of the members. Their message of condolence to the Queen
was also posted on the official royal website.

Activities in Kindergarten and Reception continued this week, with the children enthusiastically
enjoying the many opportunities made available to them – including a fun session of PE with Mr
Johnson and role play in the classroom.

Year 1 Children really impressed Miss Maclean when using 'Mother Nature’s paintbrushes’ this
week. Children used sticks, grass, flowers and leaves to mark make.

Science Topic Mystery!!

Year 4 started this week’s science lesson not knowing what their topic or lesson was about. The
classroom was set up with four work-stations, each one with a question and resources to help
them answer the question. Mr Butler gave some hints and tips as well.

Have a look at what they were doing………..….what do you think this term’s Science topic might be
in Year 4?

Year 5 have had an exciting few days back

at school. The children enjoyed their first
lesson with the new Art teacher Miss
Maclean, painting an Antarctic landscape,
as well as playing cricket with Mr Johnson
in the sunshine. In the classroom, they
have also been working hard: even learning
how to use a protractor!

Also this week, Miss Walters and her class

have been practising some Spring yoga
poses and new breathing exercises
between lessons. These are all really useful
well-being tools.

World Maths Day is back on Wednesday 5th May, 2021!

We would love to see

children at Bronte
School get involved!
Mark your calendar to
make sure you help us
work as a school team to
compete in LIVE
Mathletics activities with
other children across the
globe.

More details will

follow………
