Research
Research
Why should a manager know about research when the job entails managing people,
products, events, environments, and the like? Describe a situation where research will help
you as a manager to make a good decision.
A manager should know about the research when the job entails managing people, products, events and
environment because research will provide knowledge and it will help the manager in decision making.
A manager can take calculated risk with the help of research. If manager has enough knowledge of
research he can identify workplace problems easily and find out the effective solution to any of the
problems that might occur. It helps in increasing relationship with researchers and consultants that are
being hired. It is important for a manager to have technical and detailed background information about
products and all because manager is the one to whom employees would come with their queries and if
he wouldn’t have any knowledge about the things happening then how would he suggest a solution to
them. Research would provide long lasting and effective ways to deal with recurring issues and helps in
enhancing the processes.
Suppose I am a manager at XYZ company and the peak season is coming. For any company peak season
is very important and it must be handled effectively to get enough profit. For this being a manager, I
should know the capabilities of our company to arrange the resources at last moment. And this possible
only with the help of research. By doing research I can come to know about the details of our past
experience that would also help in forecasting the coming season. With the help of this I can easily
estimate the overall resources required. In this way research will help me as a manager to handle the
peak season effectively.
QUESTION 2:
“The problem definition stage is perhaps more critical in the research process than the
problem solution stage”, Discuss this statement. Offer a clearly focused problem statement in
the broad area of corporate culture/leadership etc. or any other area of your choice relevant
to the organization.
This statement is true that the problem definition stage is more critical in research process than the
problem solution stage because in problem definition stage is the most important stage in research
process and it directs the analysis. In problem defining stage you visualize the problem and represent it
from different angles which is definitely more critical. This stage helps in eliminating problems by listing
down in the beginning that these are the possible ways that can go wrong. It saves you from that
struggle you have to do in the end. Rather than realizing at the end you identify the problem in the start
and eradicate it. Because preventing the problem at first phase is better than battling with the problem
at the later stages. If you focus on problem defining stage it will save your time which will be consumed
in problem solving and debugging. Because you have already worked enough in problem defining stage
that a very little effort would be required in problem solution stage. The problem definition stage allows
decision makers to identify the specific problem to be solved so they can search for alternative
solutions. When a problem statement is clear a precise statement of the research to be
researched. It offers focus to the research. It clearly states the question for which a research is
trying to find the answer which definitely requires more effort. The very main reason that problem
definition stage is critical than problem solution stage is because it directs the analysis. In the whole
research process you work on the problems defined in the very beginning step so that is why It needs to
be accurate because whole analysis depends on it. Finding the right solution to the incorrect problem
helps no one because the original problem still exists. That is why finding the right problem for which a
solution is needed is critical.
QUESTION 3:
What is literature review? How would you go about doing a literature survey in the area of
business ethics/ corporate culture /leadership or any other area of your choice? What is the
purpose of a literature survey?
Literature review:
Literature review is a detailed study of literature that addresses a specific topic. It is basically a survey of
scholarly sources. The survey of books, scholarly articles and many other sources which helps in
investigating the research problem. It provides an overview of current knowledge, allowing you to
identify relevant theories in the existing research. First you do the comprehensive study then you do
interpretation of the literature related to your topic. There are few key steps for literature review.
Always search for relevant literature and stay close to your topic. Evaluate the sources. Identify the
themes and gaps. It is always best way to outline the structure. Then write your literature review.
Directly writing down the literature review is never recommended because a good literature review
does not just summarize sources. It analyzes and critically evaluate to give a clear and accurate picture
of the knowledge. The four main types of literature review are traditional or narrative, systematic, meta-
analysis and meta-synthesis.
QUESTION 4:
A production manager is concerned about the low output levels of his employees. The articles
that he read on job performance frequently mentioned four variables as important to job
performance: skill required for the job, rewards, motivation, and satisfaction. In several of
the articles it was also indicated that only if the rewards were valent (attractive) to the
recipients did motivation, satisfaction, and job performance increase, not otherwise.
Given the above situation, do the following:
The problem is the low output levels of the employees in a business organization. The production
manager is concerned about it. The low output level can be for a number of reasons. May be workers
are not skilled for the job. The employees are not compensated enough etc.
To support the low output level of employees company must ensure proper staffing and recruitment. If
the employees are fewer for the amount of work required to be done, then it will obviously lead to low
output levels. Then the job tasks must be given to the most skilled and qualified employees. If an
inexperienced or unskilled worker is given a task for which he isn't capable, the output level is going to
be low. A proper compensation system is important for the employees so that they feel appreciated for
the work they are doing for the organization. And there would be no lack motivation for a job and this
will lead to low output levels for the company. Incentives are chances for promotions, better working
conditions, bonuses, and other such benefits will help them feel like a part of the organization and will
make the employees give their best to the organization which will lead to greater success for the
company.
