Laboratory Report:
Activity # 1
Identification of Tools, Devices and Equipment.
NAME DRAWING FUNCTION
1. SATA Hard Disk The hard drive of a
computer is a device that
stores all the software
installed on a computer, as
well as all the data files
created and used by this
software. This includes any
documents you have
created and downloaded,
such as photos and music.
The hard drive is a form of
permanent storage, rather
than temporary memory
such as random-access
memory (RAM). This
means that when you turn
off the computer, the files
remain safely stored on the
drive so you can use them
again the next time you
start your computer
2. SATA Slot SATA storage devices
can transmit data to and
from the rest of the
computer much, much
faster than an otherwise
similar PATA device.

3. CMOS Battery This battery in the

motherboard, is what
powers the CMOS
RAM when the
computer is turned
off. So that it doesn’t
lose all your BIOS
information.
4. PCI Express The PCI Express
interface allows high
bandwidth
communication
between the device
and the motherboard,
as well as other
hardware.
5. Flat Screw Driver A flat-head
screwdriver is a tool
used to either tighten
or loosen slotted
screws with a single
indentation in the
head. Flat-head
screwdrivers are
available in both
metric and standard
sizes
6. SATA DVD Rom DVD-ROM
Drive permanently stores
data files which
cannot be changed,
written over or erased.
Generally a DVD-
ROM disc is not
equipped to be used
with a DVD drive
connected to a home
theater system or
television. But many
DVD-ROM drives
can generally read a
DVD movie disc.
7.Router A router is a
networking device
that forwards data
packets between
computer networks.
Routersperform the
traffic directing
functions on the
Internet.
8.ATX Power Cord ATX power
connectors are
designed to connect a
computer’s power
supply to an ATX
motherboard. They
are constructed of
metal pins laid
throughout a nylon
matrix. A female type
ATX power connector
extends from the ATX
power supply to plug
into the motherboard.
The nylon matrix on
modern ATX power
connectors can have
20 or 24 pins,
depending on the
power necessary for
the processor.
9.CPU/Processor A computer
processor, also known
as a microprocessor or
central processing unit
(CPU), is a
component in a
computer system that
functions as the brains
of a computer. It is
mainly responsible for
processing
instructions of a
computer program
and carrying out
computer operations.
10.Hub A hub, also called a
network hub, is a
common connection
point for devices in a
network. Hubs are
devices commonly
used to connect
segments of a LAN.
The hub contains
multiple ports. When
a packet arrives at one
port, it is copied to the
other ports so that all
segments of the LAN
can see all packets.
11.Floppy Disk Drive An FDD connector is
Slot a pin ribbon connector
that connects a floppy
disk drive with the
computer's
motherboard. This
connector also
provides a route
through which data on
the floppy disk can be
read and displayed on
the computer's
interface.
12. USB Port A USB port is a
standard cable
connection interface for
personal computers and
consumer electronics
devices. USB ports
allow USB devices to be
connected to each other
with and transfer digital
data over USB cables.
13. Power Supply It converts AC power
from your wall socket
into DC power that the
PC components use.
There are three different
voltage ratings that are
produced in an ATX12
PSU: 12V, 5V, and
3.3V. Different voltages
are used by different
components in the PC.
14. HDMI Port HDMI technology
transmits crystal-clear
digital video, multi-
channel surround audio,
and advanced control
data through a single
cable. One HDMI cable
can replace as many as
eleven older cables,
making your
entertainment system
easier to connect and
easier to upgrade. You
won’t find that level of
elegant simplicity in any
other connection.
15. SD RAM SDRAM
(synchronous DRAM)
is a generic name for
various kinds of
dynamic random
access memory
(DRAM) that are
synchronized with the
clock speed that the
microprocessor is
optimized for. This
tends to increase the
number of instructions
that the processor can
perform in a given
time. The speed of
SDRAM is rated in
MHz rather than in
nanoseconds (ns).
16. Memory Slot When a program is
opened, that program
is loaded from the
hard drive into RAM
storage for quick
retrieval. Random
access memory is
composed of small
memory chips that are
stored inside a
memory module, or
RAM chip. The RAM
chips, also referred to
as sticks, plug into the
vertical slots on the
motherboard.
17. IDE DVD Room DVD-ROM discs are
Drive read in DVD-ROM
and DVD-RAM
drives in computers,
but typically not in
DVD drives
connected to TVs and
home theater systems.
18. CPU Slot A CPU socket is a
single connector
between a
microprocessor and
motherboard. A CPU
socket is a distinct
mount used only for
the CPU on the
motherboard to ensure
correct circuit chip
insertion. It facilitates
CPU access and
prevents damage
when a unit is inserted
or removed. A CPU
socket also has a lock
to prevent CPU
movement, and its
design helps secure
heat sink placement
above the CPU.
19. Parallel port A parallel interface
for connecting an
external device such
as a printer. Most
personal computers
have both a parallel
port and at least one
serial port.

20. Microphone Port Many different

electrical connectors
have been used to
connect microphones
to audio

21. Floppy Disk Drive The opening on the

Slot 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch
floppy disk that
allows the floppy disk
drive to read data
from the floppy. On
the 3.5" floppy disk,
the head slot is found
behind the read/write
access door.
22. Ethernet Port An Ethernet port (aka
jack or socket) is an
opening on computer
network equipment
that Ethernet cables
plug into
23. Picker

24. DVI Port DVI (Digital Visual

Interface) is a
specification created
by the Digital Display
Working Group
(DDWG) to
accommodate analog
and digital monitors
with a single
connector. digital
signals.
25. SATA Cable SATA cables are
long, 7-pin cables.
Both ends are flat and
thin. One end plugs
into a port on the
motherboard, usually
labeled SATA, and
the other into the back
of a storage device
like a SATA hard
drive.
26. IDE Cable Generally, IDE it
refers to the types of
cables and ports used
to connect some hard
drives and optical
drives to each other
and to the
motherboard.
So an IDE cable, then,
is a cable that meets
this specification.
27. VGA Port Stands for "Video
Graphics Array." It is
the standard monitor
or display interface
used in most PCs.
Therefore, if a
montior is VGA-
compatible, it should
work with most new
computers.
28. IDE Slot Short for Integrated
Drive Electronics or
IBM Disc Electronics,
IDE is more
commonly known as
ATA or Parallel ATA
(PATA). It is a
standard interface for
IBM compatible hard
drives and CD or
DVD drives. IDE is
different than SCSI
and Enhanced Small
Device Interface
(ESDI) because its
controllers are on
each drive, meaning
the drive can connect
directly to the
motherboard or
controller.
29. Heat Sink A heat sink is a
thermal conductive
metal device designed
to absorb and disperse
heat away from a high
temperature object
such as a computer
processor.
30. Phillips Screw A screwdriver is a
Driver tool, manual or
powered, for turning
(driving or removing)
screws
31. AGP Slot Accelerated Graphics
Port (AGP) is an
interface specification
that enables 3-D
graphics to display
quickly on ordinary
personal computers.

32.Multi Tester A multimeter or a

multitester, also
known as a VOM
(Volt-Ohm meter), is
an electronic
measuring instrument
that combines several
measurement
functions in one unit.
A typical multimeter
may include features
such as the ability to
measure voltage,
current and resistance.
Multimeters may use
analog or digital
circuits—analog
multimeters (AMM)
and digital
multimeters (DMM)
33. Speaker Port Computer speakers, or
multimedia speakers,
are speakers sold for
use with computers,
although usually
capable of other audio
uses, e.g. for an MP3
player. Most such
speakers have an
internal amplifier and
consequently require a
power source, which
may be by a mains
power supply often
via an AC adapter,
batteries, or a USB
port (able to supply no
more than 2.5W DC,
500mA at 5V).
34. Anti-Static Wrist An anti-static wrist
Strap strap is a key piece of
safety gear that helps
to prevent the buildup
of static electricity
near sensitive
electronics or other
projects where static
charge could damage
electronics or cause
safety issues. The
wrist strap is often
used with an anti-
static mat or other
type of work space
covering. Special,
highly conductive
threads on the wrist
strap lead to a ground
conductor in order to
discharge static
electricity safely.
35. PCI Slot A Peripheral
Component
Interconnect (PCI)
slot is a connecting
apparatus for a 32-bit
computer bus. These
tools are built into the
motherboards of
computers and
devices in order to
allow for the addition
of PCI devices like
modems, network
hardware or sound
and video cards
36. Line In Alternatively referred
to as audio in and
sound in, the line in or
line-in is a jack found
on computer sound
cards that enable a
user to connect an
external audio device.
These devices include
CD players, audio
mixers, musical
instruments, and
microphones. They
are used to record,
play, and modify the
incoming audio.
37. Cable Tester A cable tester is an
electronic device used
to verify the electrical
connections in a
signal cable or other
wired assembly. Basic
cable testers are
continuity testers that
verify the existence of
a conductive path
between ends of the
cable, and verify the
correct wiring of
connectors on the
cable.
38. LAN Card LAN cards also make
it possible to connect
many different
computers together
through the LAN. As
long as each of the
computers has the
proper IP package
addresses.
The speeds of each
LAN will vary
however. This will be
depenanct on the
LAN cards
themselves. Some are
capable of speeds up
to 10/100 mbps and
then there are some
that are rated up to
10/100/1000.
39. Paint Brush I have used a small
paint brush, but very
carefully, since any
brush can cause a
static charge. Any
rubbing will create a
charge, and brushes of
any kind have a lot of
surface to rub. It is
best to touch the
electronic components
only as needed.
40. Jumper n a computer, a
jumper is a pair of
prongs that are
electrical contact
points set into the
computer
motherboard or an
adapter card . When
you set a jumper, you
place a plug on the
prongs that completes
a contact. In effect,
the jumper acts as a
switch by closing (or
opening) an electrical
circuit. Jumpers can
be added or removed
to change the function
or performance of a
PC component. A
group of jumpers is
sometimes called a
jumper block .

41. DDR RAM DDR SDRAM

(double data rate
SDRAM) is
synchronous dynamic
RAM (SDRAM) that
can theoretically
improve memory
clock speed to at least
200 MHz*. It
activates output on
both the rising and
falling edge of the
system clock rather
than on just the rising
edge, potentially
doubling output. It's
expected that a
number of Socket 7
chipset makers will
support this form of
SDRAM.
42. IDE Hard Disk The hard drive of a
Drive computer is a device
that stores all the
software installed on a
computer, as well as
all the data files
created and used by
this software. This
includes any
documents you have
created and
downloaded, such as
photos and music.
43. 12 volts Power The 24 pin main
Slot power connector was
added in ATX12V 2.0
to provide extra
power needed by PCI
Express slots. The
older 20 pin main
power cable only has
one 12 volt line.
44. AVR The function of the
Automatic Voltage
Regulator (AVR) is to
maintain constant
voltage and power
line conditioning to
the equipment load
under a wide variety
of conditions, even
when the utility input
voltage, frequency or
system load vary
widely.
45. Serial Port An asynchronous port
on the computer used
to connect a serial
device to the
computer and capable
of transmitting one bit
at a time. Serial ports
are typically identified
on IBM compatible
computers as COM
(communications)
ports. For example, a
mouse might be
connected to COM1
and a modem to
COM2.
46. SATA Cable SATA (pronounced
say-da), short for
Serial ATA (which is
an abbreviation for
Serial Advanced
Technology
Attachment), is an
IDE standard first
released in 2001 for
connecting devices
like optical drives and
hard drives to the
motherboard.
47. Printer Port A printer port is a
female connector, or
port, on the back of a
computer that allows
it to interact with a
printer. These ports
enable users to send
documents and
pictures to a printer.
48. Floppy Disk Drive A floppy cable is a
Cable ribbon cable found in
PC's that allow one or
more floppy disk
drives to be connected
to a computer. In the
illustration to the
right, is a visual
example of what a
floppy cable may look
like and where each
end of connectors
connect. As can be
seen, this cable allows
a desktop computer to
have two floppy
drives connected to
one floppy controller.
49. Floppy Disk Drive A Floppy Disk Drive,
also called FDD or
FD for short, is a
computer disk drive
that enables a user to
save data to
removable diskettes.
Although 8" disk
drives were first made
available in 1971, the
first real disk drives
used were the 5 1/4"
floppy disk drives,
which were later
replaced with the 3
1/2" floppy disk
drives.
50. Wire Stripper A wire stripper is a
portable handheld tool
used by workers,
especially electricians,
for removing the
protective coating of
an electric wire in
order to replace or
repair the wire. It is
also capable of
stripping the end
portions of an electric
wire in order to
connect them to other
wires or to terminals.
A wire stripper is
often considered an
important tool for
professional
electricians and other
related personnel.
