1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Scope
This specification covers the general minimum requirements for the planning,
execution, and control of design, fabrication, and construction drawings. This
specification applies to all drawings prepared by OWNER personnel and by
CONTRACTORS working for OWNER. Any exceptions to the requirements of
this specification shall be submitted in writing for resolution by the OWNER.
1.2. Objective
The objective of this specification is to achieve consistency and a uniform level of
quality in OWNER design, fabrication, and construction drawings. This
specification is intended for co-ordinating the work performed by drafting and the
various engineering disciplines both within and under contract to OWNER.

2. DEFINITIONS

2.1. Drawings
Drawings include all plans, sections, elevations and details applicable to the
contract together with all modifications to them and any further working diagrams,
flowsheets or schedules.
2.2. CAD
CAD is Computer Aided Design and/or Drafting carried out by commercially
available computer graphics system.
2.3. CAD Data
CAD Data is graphical, or non-graphical information that directly relates to the
graphical information, in a magnetic form that is produced by the CONTRACTOR
and which will be made available to OWNER the end of the Project.

The CONTRACTOR will use the Intergraph suite of CADD programmes including
but not limited to Intergraph Microstation, Intergraph 2D PDS, Intergraph PDS and
Smartplant.

The following items are considered part of CAD Data but are not limited to:

 Drawing files
 Model Files
 Symbols Libraries
 Font libraries
 Datafiles
 Reference files

3. GENERAL GUIDELINES
Accurate drawings containing standardised elements, symbols, and abbreviations
are essential for communicating the design and construction details of a project.

that cover the general requirements for planning, executing, and controlling
various types of engineering drawings.

Standards for planning a drawing include the choice of materials, orientation,


format, and size of a drawing, and the details to be included in a drawing.

The discussion on drawing execution includes standards for lettering and lines,
and for the use of symbols and abbreviations. This section also discusses
general notes, reference material, equipment identification, title block style, and
drawing identification numbers.

The section dealing with drawing control includes procedures for initial issue,
revisions, reproduction, and transmittal.

4. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS
4.1. Project Standards
The following specifications apply to this specification.

5. DRAFTING PRACTICES.
5.1. Legibility
Drawings shall be done in a clean and neat manner to ensure legibility and to
permit clear reproduction of prints.

5.2. Space
Adequate blank space shall be allowed around details and lettering for good
legibility, especially on drawings to be reduced in size.
5.3. Protection
Drawings shall be protected from scratching and smearing at all times. Originals
shall be kept in hanging file when not being worked on. Drawings shall never be
rolled except for shipping.
5.4. Shipping
Where ever possible drawings shall be transmitted electronically and printed at
the receiving end. The electronic transmission shall include all CAD Data,
required to produce a complete drawing at the receiving end.

The following procedure shall be followed when shipping hard copy drawings or
documents.

A4-size drawings shall be shipped flat protected by a rigid cardboard folder.

A3, A2, A1, and A0-size drawings shall be shipped rolled together and fastened
with a rubber band.

The rolled drawings shall be inserted in a tube and wads of paper placed at both
ends to prevent movement of the drawings inside the tube.
5.5. Corrections
Corrections to polyester drawing sheets should be made with a slightly
dampened, nonabrasive, vinyl eraser.
5.6. Decals
For manually produced drawings pre-printed decals may be used for OWNER
hallmark and logo, general notes, and other complex details that are repeated on
many drawings and provided that the background matches exactly the
background of the drawing.

6. DRAWING PROCEDURES
6.1. Planning
6.1.1. Materials
All manually produced drawings, shall be prepared on polyester based film
sheets, pre-printed in the required project format or using by decals as specified
above.

CAD Drawings may be plotted on translucent paper, however “Issued for


Construction” drawings shall be plotted on polyester film.

In appropriate circumstances A3 size drawings may be plotted on paper

6.1.2. Drawing Sizes


For ease of filing, packaging, and preparing bound reports, only the following
drawing sheet sizes shall be used.

Specifications, equipment details, and reports shall be drawn on A4-size sheets.


Drawings such as instrument loop diagrams, piping line lists, piping isometrics,
vessel outlines, and instrument installation details shall be prepared on A3 size
drawing sheets. The use of A0 size sheets should be avoided and should not
normally be used except for large general arrangement drawings and layouts.

A1 size sheets shall be used for flowsheets, piping drawings, structural drawings,
electrical drawings, plot plans, and large schedules such as electrical cable
schedules.

6.1.3. Drawing Orientation and Format


Plan drawings for all disciplines shall be prepared with plant north orientation the
same for all drawings for a particular project. The plant north arrow shall point
either up or to the left depending on which orientation best suits all the drawings.
The relationship between plant north and true north shall only be shown on the
Site Layout Plan which shall be oriented to true north.

Drawings shall be uncrowded and presented in a balanced arrangement.

If possible, all sections and elevations shall be presented from the same
perspective. The usual perspective shall be looking towards either the top or the
left of the plan-view drawing.

Specific drawing formats for individual disciplines shall be the CONTRACTOR


Standard provided it meets the requirements of this specification
6.1.4. Detailing
Careful consideration shall be given to the number of details needed. Adequate
space shall be allowed on the sheet for all details.

Unnecessary repetition shall be avoided.

Section cuts shall be lettered from left to right and shown in sequential order
whenever possible.

The location of details shall be clearly indicated using the standard


cross-reference numbering system shown in Attachment 1

When multiple, identical units are shown, only one typical unit shall be detailed.
All units shall be identified.

Equipment details shall be drawn to scale when necessary for clarity or illustration
purposes.

Clouding shall enclose details or dimensions not final at the time of issuing a
preliminary drawing. The caption, HOLD XX shall be noted inside the clouded
area. A list of holds shall be added to the drawing identifying all holds on the
drawing together with a brief description.
6.1.5. Scales
Within the Intergraph system all original data is held at full-scale. When hard copy
drawings are to be produced a reference file of the drawing frame is used to
surround the data to be displayed. The combination of Reference file and data is
then scaled to suit the paper size

The plotted scale used shall be stated clearly on the drawing e.g. SCALE 1:50. In
addition, a metric graduation scale shall be included on all layout drawings to
enable the scale of any reproduction to be determined.

When it is necessary to use more than one scale on a drawings, each plan view,
elevation, scrap view, detail etc. shall have the scale clearly identified e.g. PLAN
VIEW LOOKING NORTH SCALE 1:50.
6.1.6. Dimensions
Dimension lines shall be sharp and well defined.

Arrowheads shall be made accurately and distinctly.

A sufficient number of dimensions shall be shown to make scaling or calculating


of dimensions in the field unnecessary.

Overall layout dimensions shall be shown on all equipment plans issued for
construction.

Dimensions more precise than plus or minus 1mm shall not be used.

Dimensions symmetrical about a centreline shall not be repeated. The centreline


shall be labelled. Only one half needs to be dimensioned.

Dimensions shall be written to read from the bottom or from the right side of the
drawing.

All dimensions shall be given in millimetres. Exceptions are pipe sizes

All equipment, pipe supports, piping, structures, and buildings shall be located by
co-ordinates given in mm.

If a dimension must be held exactly, the words FIX AT shall be added to the
dimension given (e.g., grade elevations or precisely machined components).
6.2. Execution
6.2.1. Drafting Lines
All lines shall be sharp and uniform in density and thickness in order to produce
clear and legible prints.

Different line widths and configurations shall be used to differentiate among the
types of visual information shown on the drawing. Approved line types and their
purposes are shown in Attachment 2
6.2.2. Lettering
All letters, figures, and arrowheads shall be clear, neat, legible, and dark enough
to reproduce well.

Lettering shall be in capitals only and placed to read from the bottom or from the
right hand side of the drawing.

No lettering is to be underlined. If particular attention to a note is required then a


larger font is to be used.

6.2.3. Symbols
A unique legend of symbols shall be used by each engineering discipline. The
symbols used shall be shown on each drawing or if necessary on a separate
drawing e.g. P&ID symbology.
6.2.4. Abbreviations
In order to save time and drawing space, words shall be abbreviated except in
cases where confusion or ambiguity might occur. Title blocks shall not contain
abbreviations except in cases where lack of space precludes spelling out the
entire word.
6.2.5. General Notes
General notes shall be located in the upper right-hand corner of the drawing.

Tables such as bills of material if included on the drawing shall be located above
the title block with the first item nearest the title block.

Notes shall be sequenced and, when necessary, worded exactly alike on all
drawings where the notes appear.

Notes shall appear as required on the overall plot plan, the legend sheet, and
specific discipline drawing index.

References to general notes shall be made on individual drawings.

Care shall be taken in the placement of notes, especially on plan drawings where
additional notes and future equipment additions and revisions are likely to be
necessary.
6.2.6. Reference Drawings
Reference drawings are drawings that clarify or show additional information
relating to a particular drawing. Examples include drawings in which a line is
continued, piping plans and isometric drawings related to flowsheet drawings,
drawings of details, and sections made of plan view drawings located on other
drawings.

Indication of the specific reference drawing shall be made in the immediate


proximity of the associated item.

Reference drawings of a general nature shall be listed in the reference block.

6.2.7. Equipment Identification


6.2.7.1. General
All equipment supplied to a project shall be assigned a unique identification
number.

All equipment shall be numbered in accordance with the requirements of


Specification GTL-02-2
6.2.7.2. Equipment List
The project team shall maintain an equipment list to catalogue all current
identification assignments as well as general data on the equipment. The format

for the index is shown in Attachment 4. The general format may be changed to
suit the specific needs of a project or equipment type as long as the intent shown
in Attachment 4 is maintained.
6.2.8. Title Blocks
Attachment 5 shows a title block with an explanation of the information required in
each section.

The title block of a drawing shall be completely filled out and signed off prior to
issue.

The information in the title block shall not be changed. All revision data and
approvals shall be shown in the revision block.

Drawings consisting of more than one sheet shall include the multi-sheet notation,
SHEET OF , in the title block of each sheet.
6.2.9. Drawing Numbering System
6.2.9.1. Number Assignment
A drawing number is a code by which drawings are identified and recorded. The
number relates the drawing to the appropriate project and to the specific
engineering design discipline. Drawings shall be numbered in accordance with
Standard GTL-02-3

The Project Team shall develop a drawing list and assign drawing numbers in
accordance with the project specific document numbering system used by the
Engineering Contractor. In order to accommodate the Company number the
drawings will be double numbered by Contractor on completion of the Project. The
Engineering Contractor’s number shall be used at all times during the execution of
the Project.
6.2.9.2. Checking/Approval Colour Code
Drawings issued for checking or approval shall be marked up in the colours
specified below and returned to the appropriate authority displaying the signatures
of those who have made comments

 Red - signifies additions or corrections to be made to the drawing.

 Yellow - signifies that a portion of the drawing has been checked and is
correct. No action is required.

 Blue - signifies drawing items to be deleted.

 Lead - signifies comments that are not to be added to the drawing.


6.3. Reproduction of Drawings
6.3.1. General
Manual original drawings shall be done with plastic lead or ink on 4-mils Mylar film
with matte surface on both sides.

Master originals of manually produced drawings shall be maintained by the


originating group for the duration of the project. Only copies shall be issued for

checking, approval, bidding, and field use. Document Control shall retain
polyester reproducible of all issues of CAD produced drawings

All copying shall produce clearly legible prints of the same quality as the original.
Lines shall be reproduced with the same density on all parts of the copy. Inferior
quality reproductions are not acceptable. These include reproductions that are
blurred, faded, hazy, underexposed, or overexposed with heavy backgrounds.

6.3.2. Reproduction During Design Phase


The reproduction and distribution of drawings in the required format and size
during the design phase will be in accordance with the agreed Distribution Matrix
that shall be developed by the CONTRACTOR and shall included OWNER
requirements.
6.4. Control
6.4.1. Drawing Index/Drawing Status
6.4.1.1. Drawing index
All drawings pertaining to construction of a project shall be listed on the index.
The drawing index provides a current and final record of drawings issued on each
project.

Each class of drawings such as electrical, instrumentation, piping, and vessels


shall be listed on separate index sheets.

Drawings shall be listed by numerical sheet numbers, titles, and issue codes. The
issue revisions indicate what each drawing has been issued for, approval, bids, or
for construction.
6.4.1.2. Drawing status report
The drawing status report serves as a work planning and scheduling tool for each
discipline group. The report provides current information on status and schedule
of drawings or items of work not yet issued.

During the entire design stage, the drawing index and drawing status established
for each project is issued at intervals determined by project requirements. Prior to
issue, both shall be updated, showing as accurately as possible such information
as the anticipated drawing revision number and dates, and estimated dates to
issue for construction.
6.4.1.3. Drawing Index Format
Attachment 6 illustrates the format for the drawing index/status report. This
format shall be used for all projects to provide control of drawings and a record of
the current status of drawings. A description of the information required on the
drawing index/status report follows.
6.4.1.3.1. Drawing Number
The drawing number shall be entered in this space.
6.4.1.3.2. Revision and Date
This column shall show the current revision or change for the drawing and the
date the revision or change was issued.

6.4.1.3.3. Drawing Title


The title/scope of work entered in the index shall be exactly as it appears in the
title block of the drawing. Approved abbreviations are acceptable.

6.4.1.3.4. IFB/IFC Revisions


The revision letter or number that is current when the drawing is issued for bid or
for construction, respectively, shall be entered in this column.
6.4.2. Drawing Revisions
All drawing revision issues shall be identified in accordance with the Engineering
Standard for Document and Drawing numbering (GTL-02-3)

When modifications have been made to a previously issued drawing, the areas
that have been affected shall be enclosed with clouding and the change
letter/triangle added to the drawing. Any clouding and corresponding change
letter from previous changes shall be removed from the drawing.

At the time of issue the revision block, and IFC block if required, shall all be filled
in and signed off appropriately.

All Revisions boxes shall be completed with a clear and concise description of the
changes made to the drawing. A statement, such as GENERAL REVISION, is not
acceptable. The originator making the change shall initial and date the revision
block. All revisions shall be checked and initialled by the issuing authority prior to
reissue.

All related drawings shall also be revised to conform to the drawing on which the
change originated. Related drawings shall also show appropriate change
notations.
6.5. Transmittals
All drawings whether issued as hard copy or electronically shall be issued under
the cover of a document/drawing transmittal. The transmittal shall show what is
sent, to whom, for what purpose, and the date of transmittal.

A record shall be kept of all drawing transmittals.

7. FINAL DRAWING SUBMISSION

Line widths shall be chosen from the following values: 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm,
0.9mm, 1.4mm, 2.0mm.

Preferred widths for thin and thick lines are 0.3mm and 0.7mm.

CAD Design

A typical example of CAD line weighting is given below:-

All lettering shall be in capitals and vertical. Slanted letters are not acceptable.
The distance between characters and spacing lines such as lists and tables shall
not be less than 1.0mm
