Tutorial 1: X-Ray Diffraction

This document contains 6 review questions for a tutorial on x-ray diffraction. The questions cover topics like the energy of x-ray beams at different wavelengths, the short wavelength limit of x-rays generated from an x-ray tube at varying acceleration voltages, absorption edges and choosing filters, deriving the structure factor and intensity of diffraction for a body-centered cubic crystal, and the effect of particle size on diffraction patterns. The final question asks to determine the 2θ value for the first diffraction line of a simple cubic structure using copper K-alpha radiation.

Tutorial 1: X-ray diffraction

Review Questions

1. What is the energy of x-ray beams of wavelength 0.71Å (Mo Ka)

and 1.54 Å (Cu Ka)?
2. What is short wavelength limit (SWL) in the spectrum of the x-
rays generated by an x-ray tube? Calculate the SWL for the
acceleration voltage of 30kV.
3. What is absorption edgy?
How to choose a filter?
4. Derive the structure factor and intensity of diffraction for a BCC
crystal consisting of one types of atoms only.
5. Discuss the effect of particle (grain) size on diffraction pattern.
6. Determine the 2θ value for the first line (the one of the lowest 2θ
value) in the powder XRD patterns of a simple cubic with a=4.0 Å.
Cu Ka with a λ=1.5418 Å was used to obtain the XRD pattern.
