Lesson 4

This lesson plan outlines a 50-minute lesson for 3rd grade students about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Students will learn key vocabulary and watch videos about reducing waste. They will then participate in sorting activities to identify whether objects should be reduced, reused, or recycled. The lesson aims to teach students how their actions can help the environment through reducing unnecessary waste.

Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Kylie Torrens Date: 3/11/20

Group Size: 25 students Allotted Time:50 minutes Grade Level: 3rd

Subject or Topic: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle #4

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

a. Standard - 4.5.2.D- Describe how people can help the environment by
reducing, reusing, recycling and composting.

Learning Targets/Objectives: The third grade students will be able to identify how they can
reduce, reuse and recycle by completing sorting activities.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1)Color cards 1) Observational
2)4 corners 2) observational
3) Sorting Activity 3) Written Assessment
Assessment Scale:
Compare and Contrast
Advanced- Students are able to correctly place 80- 100% of the objects in their correct
grouping(reduce, reuse and recycle)
Proficient- Students are able to correctly place 60%- 79% of the objects in the correct
grouping (reduce, reuse and recycle)
Basic- Students are able to correctly place 0-59% of the objects in the correct grouping
(reduce, reuse and recycle)
Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
The students know that humans impact the environment. The students know that their
actions can hurt their environment.
Key Vocabulary:
Reduce: Make smaller or less in amount or size.
Reuse:To use again or use more than once
Recycle: Convert materials into a new material
Landfill- an area where garbage is dumped and covered with dirt.
Organic- grown only with natural fertilizers.
biodegradable- able to be broken down by tiny organisms.
raw materials- things in nature that people use to make things.
Compost- soil like mixture made from rotting plant and animal matter.
Pollution-the introduction of harmful materials into our soil, air or water.
Content/Facts:
● Reduce makes less garbage.
○ We can buy only what we need, buy products with less packaging, and look for
objects we can reuse.
● Reuse is to use an object more than once.
○ Refill a water bottle, update your computer instead of buying a new one, use a
reusable bag rather than a plastic one.
● Recycle is to turn one item into another item.
○ You can recycle materials that are glass, cardboard, aluminium and lead
batteries.
● Landfill is the site where all of the materials that are waste are sent.
● Waste is anything that we throw away.
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
● I will first ask the students what they already know about reduce, reuse and recycle.
● The students will get excited for learning about reduce, reuse and recycle, by
watching the video reduce, reuse and recycle in that order. I will have the students
watch this video twice, once to hear what the video is saying, and another time to be
able to understand the content of the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=EWxjFLDoIDA
● The students will then work in their small groups to review the definitions of reduce,
reuse and recycle.
Development/Teaching Approaches
1. The teacher will have the students think about anytime they have reused, recycled or
reduced their use of an object. The teacher will share how she has taken part in each
of the three.
2. The students will then have the opportunity to share how they have reduced, reused
and recycled.
3. The teacher will have different objects in the front of the classroom.
4. The teacher will show the object to the class one by one and have the students go to
the corner that is labeled with the answer they think the object would fall into
(reduce, reuse, recycle, and I don't know)
5. After each object the teacher will tell the students which answer is correct and
provide evidence to the students why that is correct.
6. The students will then go through the “the Life of a
Can”https://kutztown.discoveryeducation.com/static/interactives/cep/never-ending-
story/
7. The students will be given a chart that is labeled with three sections, one for each
reduce, reuse, and recycle.
8. The students will also receive pictures of objects that they will have to sort into the
three groups.
9. Once the students have completed sorting the objects, they will discuss with their
group members to compare their answers.
10. Once the students are finished in their groups, there will be a whole class instruction
to ensure all students have the correct answers.
11. The teacher will go through the objects one by one and ask the students where they
put their object and why they put it there.
12. The teacher will confirm the students' answers or give them the correct answer. For
the correct and the wrong answer, the teacher will provide evidence to why the
object gets placed in the group it does.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
Students were able to correctly identify materials to their grouping of whether we should
reduce the use of a material, we should recycle and object or if we find a new way to use an
object. The teacher will tell the students there are even more ways we can help create a
healthier environment. This will help the students become more excited about learning
about renewable resources in the next lesson.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
Follow all IEPs
When the teacher is showing the objects to the student, the teacher will give a detailed
explanation of each of the objects. For the worksheet, the child will need to use their
monocular to be able to see the objects in the picture and the chart with the three groups.

Materials/Resources:
● materials for the teacher lead grouping activity
○ apple core, lamp turned on, soda can, water bottle, plastic bag, paper bag,
milk carton, a cardboard box, plastic leftover container.
● Color cards on the students desk (they will be on the students desk everyday)
● The paper for the sorting activity
● The object cards for the sorting activity.
● Scissors for each of the students to cut the cards apart.

Personal Reflection Questions

Additional reflection/thoughts
Material Sort
Students, you will now sort materials into groups. Be careful, some of these
materials can go into multiple groups. Be prepared to explain why you put each of
the objects into their grouping.
