ANSWERS:
Q1) Using the Barriers of Communication process devise a plan how to remove those
hurdles created in a communication process that you are a part of. (1000-word).
A) Introduction:
The word communication is derived from a Latin word COMMUNIS which means
“something common”. Therefore, when we communicate, we are indeed trying to establish
commonness of thoughts or feelings with other individuals. In other words, communication is a
process of sharing ideas, words and attitudes, with someone. It is a basic human need. As human
being, we need somebody to help us, talk to us, and hear us. The basic purpose of
communication is to bring changes in the behaviour of the receiver.
Two elements are important in any communication process that are speaker (or source) and
listener or receiver. In the communication, process the message moves from the source to the
destination.
Source Message Destination (receiver)
The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the message of the
sender. Feedback is critical for effective communication between sender and receiver. Therefore,
communication is not a linear process; it is a cyclic process.

Although, basic Communication skills might sound quite hypothetical; however, for a
virtually impaired individual like me, it is highly unprecedented/unpredictable.

1) How your style of communication is different from others?

Gesture, and 60% body language, 10% selection of words, and 30% Tone

2) How do other people perceive your communication style?

As Paulo Coelho remarked in his book “Veronica decides to die”
“Whenever someone is suffering, people who surround
him/her display a bit of compassion for him. However, deep down inside, they are grateful to
god that they don’t suffer through the same misery.”
The same goes for individuals who are visually impaired like me.
3) Why communication is important for you?
Mass communication is done to impact people. It has three main motives to make people
Read, Understand, and React. It sets basic knowledge for people to interact in society with each
other and with situations. Sociology help perceive the psychology of the people not at an
individual once you are successful at gaining knowledge of society’s functions and structure, you
will be able to transport ideal or suitable messages in society. From designing content of the
communication to communicate to the people until the post scenario of communication is also
said to be a subject matter of Sociology.
Marshall McLuhan states the importance of choosing a right medium to impart the message to
the society is very essential. McLuhan recommends that a medium itself, not the substance it
conveys, be the concentration of study. He said that medium influences the public in which it
assumes a part not just by the substance conveyed over the medium, yet in addition to the
attributes of the medium itself.
Media theories are now being developed based on critical thinking and qualitative method.
Communication can be viewed as central part of consciousness as well as the element of human
activity. In addition, Sociological analysis of communication is necessary to understand whether
mass media have any impact on social structure and vice versa.
From home to school from school to workplace we use different ways to communicate with
others because each individual plays carries different social status, mindset, and social skills.
Hence, here Sociology comes in handy when you are at home you talk to your family member
according to that. When you are at work, you will be more careful and formal following work
and social etiquette so that you do not fall in trouble.
As characterized by C. Wright Mills in The Power Elite (1956), the broad communications
have two critical sociological attributes: to start with, not very many individuals can impart to an
awesome number; and, second, the group of onlookers has no viable method for replying.
As in today’s time, Mass Media overpowers the mental lives of people. Therefore, it creates
intense curiosity among Sociologist to know more about mass media and its effect on society. In
past also we have seen the different instance where people used dissimilar tactics to convey their
messages and set up propaganda in society. Early examinations by Harold Lasswell, Paul
Lazarsfeld, and others appeared to demonstrate that media impacts were, in fact, immediate and
capable the supposed ‘hypodermic’ model of impact. Be that as it may, more escalated examine
uncovered that mass interchanges have interceded in complex ways and that their consequences
for the group of onlookers rely upon elements, for instance, social class, social settings, values
and ethics, convictions, enthusiastic state etc.
Thus, for better communication one needs to understand society and human behavior, as Media
and Sociology are complementary to each other

4) Opinion of five people about your communication skills:

Q3) What are the factors that influence your communication process? Critically analyse the pros
and cons. (1000-word)

“something common”. Therefore, when we communicate, we are indeed trying to establish
commonness of thoughts or feelings with other individuals. In other words, communication is a

.) Factors that influence your communication process/skills:

1) Temperament/Attitude:
.) Greco-Roman Model of Temperament and Communication:
In this Greco-Roman model, there are four archetypal temperaments found in the population.
a. The melancholic person is one who is described as quiet, introvert, moody and anxious, with a
predominance of black bile (Melancholic behaviour). It corresponds to the temperament profile
of anti-social and deviant individuals. The melancholic person, for example, presents an
introverted and unstable in mood or emotion. It is believed that such a temperament is consistent
with symptoms of internalizing conditions and is prone (likely, susceptible) to inefficient
Communication skill.
b. The sanguine person is one who is described as cheerful, spirited, and good-natured with a
predominance of blood. They are prone (likely) to be an extrovert and are not susceptible to
ineffective communication.
c. The choleric person is one who is described as angry and irritable. It has a predominance of
yellow bile (anger). They are prone to suffer through bipolar disorder and susceptible to
ineffective communication skill.
d. The phlegmatic person is one who is described as slow to being emotionally triggered/ arouse.
It has a predominance of phlegm/ self-control. Such individuals are prone to eloquent
communication skill.
2) Family:
i. Family performs a number of social functions. It teaches about social customs, mores,
traditions, norms, etiquette to the coming generations. Family exercises social control over its
members and bring them into conformity with accepted standards. Senior members of family
directly control the behavior of children and thereby they became a good citizen.
ii) It is another important essential function of family. It is said man is not born human but made
human. Newborn human baby became human being after they are socialized. Family plays an
important role in the socialization process, which makes his eloquent in speech and
communication.

3) Socialization:
Socialization is one of the primary agents of Communication. Living in a society, family
and a state, human baby learns norms, values, morals, and ideals of society. He learns culture
and acquires character through the process of socialization. His personality develops in the
course of his living in family, which makes his eloquent in speech and communication.

4) Knowledge of Subject Matter:

A person who is well educated or knowledgeable about certain topics may communicate with
others at a high level of understanding. The receiver who is relatively less knowledgeable of the
topic under discussion may be unable to comprehend the message or consider the sender to be an
expert. Because of this misperception, the receiver may neglect to ask questions and may not
receive the correct information.
For example, doctors are required to communicate with the patient in a language that is
understandable to the patient (patient's native language). He is also required not to use jargons
while delivering health education or some other useful information to the patient. The
educational status of the patient must be taken into consideration while communicating with the
patient.

5) Public Opinion:
i) The third class includes all the remaining masses of people who are generally indifferent to
public affairs, reading little and thinking less about them. So far as they have any opinion, they
simply borrow or adopt it from the first two classes or from the place or social class to which
they belong.
ii) Men of this type will now and then be attracted by the personality of a leader or fascinated by
a movement. They will follow him or it, not because they understand his or its politics but
because they like some of his or its qualities or because they arc sentimentally attached to his
personality or movement. This large group neither makes opinion as thinkers, nor helps to mold
it as critics, but it swells its volume by its numbers.
iii) The actual size of this group varies from country to country, but it is everywhere very large.
By far the largest majority of the people of a state belongs to this class.
Q4) Develop an advertisement campaign based on elements of Communication (700-word).
A) Introduction:
An advertising campaign is a series of advertisement messages that share a single idea
and theme which make up an integrated marketing communication (IMC). An IMC is a platform
in which a group of people can group their ideas, beliefs, and concepts into one large media base.
Advertising campaigns utilize diverse media channels over a particular period and target
identified audiences.
The campaign theme is the central message that will be received in the promotional activities and
is the prime focus of advertising campaign, as it sets the motif for the series of individual
advertisements and other marketing communications that will be used. The campaign themes are
usually produced with the objective of being used for a significant period but many of them are
temporal due to factors like being not effective or market conditions, competition and marketing
mix.
Advertising campaigns are built to accomplish a particular objective or a set of objectives. Such
objectives usually include establishing a brand, raising brand awareness, aggrandizing the rate of
conversions/sales. The rate of success or failure in accomplishing these goals is reckoned via
effectiveness measures. There are five key points at which an advertising campaign must
consider to ensure an effective campaign. These points are, integrated marketing
communications, media channels, positioning, the communications process diagram and touch
points.

.) Advertisement campaign based on elements of Communication:

1) Advertisement to warn people from Danger:
i.

A warning sign is a type of sign , which indicates a potential

hazard, obstacle, or condition requiring special attention. Some are traffic signs that indicate
hazards on roads that may not be readily apparent to a driver.
While warning traffic sign designs vary, they usually take the shape of an equilateral triangle
with a white background and thick red border. In the People's Republic of China (except
for Macau and Hong Kong), they appear with a black border and a yellow background.
In Sweden, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Finland, Iceland, North
Macedonia and Poland, they have a red border with an amber background. The polar bear
warning sign in Svalbard recently changed from displaying a black bear on white background to
a white bear on black background (both signs are triangular with a red border). Some countries
(like France, Norway and Spain) that normally use a white background have adopted an orange
or amber background for roadwork or construction signs.
ii.

Ukraine falling rocks sign

2) Advertisement to educate people about wild life:

i) WFF:

WWF's giant panda logo originated from a panda named Chi Chi that had been

transferred from Beijing Zoo to London Zoo in 1958, three years before WWF became
established. Being famous as the only panda residing in the Western world at that time, her
uniquely recognisable physical features and status as an endangered species were seen as ideal to
serve the organization's need for a strong recognisable symbol that would overcome all language
barriers.[25] The organization also needed an animal that would have an impact in black and white
printing. The logo was then designed by Sir Peter Scott from preliminary sketches by Gerald
Watterson, a Scottish naturalist.
The logo was slightly simplified and made more geometric in 1978, and was revised
significantly again in 1986, at the time that the organization changed its name, with the new
version featuring solid black shapes for eyes. In 2000 a change was made to the font used for the
initials "WWF" in the logo.
ii) Forest services:
Smokey Bear is the icon of the U.S. Forest Service's long-running campaign against wildfires.

3) Advertisement to prevent people from violating the law within the premises:
For landowners, the nuisance of potential trespassers and the liability that comes with
them is a real concern. Because of this issue, many owners of private land must take special care
to post the appropriate signage to deter passersby or people with nefarious intentions from going
in.
A formal “no trespassing” sign may differ in format and content from state to state since
trespassing laws vary across the country, but all states have them in some form or another.

4) Advertisement to educate people about tackling with health issues:

Quitting tobacco
Problem
Quitting tobacco is not easy as tobacco dependence is a cluster of behavioural, cognitive and
physiological phenomena. Very few tobacco users can successfully quit the habit in their first
attempt.
Social norms do not support tobacco users to quit in some high-burden countries. For example,
the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) shows that:
 In China: only 23.2% of Chinese adults believe smoking causes serious illnesses. Only
24.6% believe exposure to tobacco smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults
and lung illnesses in children. Only 16.1% of current adult smokers plan to or are
thinking about quitting in the next 12 months.
 In India, about 26% of current adult smokers plan to or are thinking about quitting in the
next 12 months.
Evidence-based support to quit tobacco use (tobacco dependence treatment) includes methods
from simple medical advice to pharmacotherapy, along with quit lines and counselling.
However, tobacco users have low levels of awareness of the evidence about these tobacco
dependence treatment interventions.
