Lecture Notes 2 - MDM

The document provides an overview of the moment distribution method for analyzing beams. It discusses key concepts like fixed end moments, member and joint stiffness factors, distribution factors, and carry-over factors. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to calculate these values and iteratively solve for member end moments until equilibrium is reached at each joint. The method allows determining internal member forces through a systematic distribution of fixed end and unbalanced joint moments.

Moment Distribution Method
The moment-distribution method is a displacement method of analysis that is easy to apply once
certain elastic constants have been determined.

1. Fixed end moment (FEM)

2. Member stiffness factor

3. Joint stiffness factor

4. Distribution Factor (DF)

5. Member Relative-stiffness Factor

6. Carry-Over Factor (CO)
