Electromagnetic Spectrum & Virtual Lab

Light travels as an electromagnetic wave. Its key characteristics include amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and crest and trough. Frequency and wavelength are inversely related - as frequency increases, wavelength decreases and vice versa. The electromagnetic spectrum refers to the full range of different types of electromagnetic radiation. Visible light is a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can perceive. Radiation ranges from radio waves to gamma rays based on wavelength, with shorter wavelengths having higher frequencies and energies. Analysis of emission spectra can be used to identify elements.

❏ Set the “frequency slider” to about 0.2 Hz ❏ Now set the “frequency slider” to about 1.1
❏ Now set the frequency slider to about 0.7 Hz

EM ON C - Boh l
Electrons can absorb energy from various
sources (electricity) and jump to a higher
energy level – when they lose that energy, they
emit a photon. This corresponds to a certain
frequency of light in the visible spectrum!

● Ground state: An atom with its

electrons in the lowest possible energy
levels (closer to the nucleus).
● Excited state: Electrons that absorb
energy and “jump” to higher energy
levels (further from the nucleus).
models to indicate the

EM ON C - Boh l absorption or release of energy by

electrons as they change
energy levels.

Highlight the correct words below:

In all of these hydrogen atoms the electron moves from a (lower/higher) energy state to a (lower/higher)
energy state.
