Application of Conic Section in Real Life

Circles, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas appear frequently in everyday life as conic sections. Circular structures include clocks, compact discs, and the Aldar Headquarters building. Parabolic shapes are found in reflectors, airplane noses, and animal ears. Ellipses define paths like the Ellipse Park near the White House and the Ford logo. Hyperbolas describe the shape of an hourglass and the shadow of a lampshade. Conic sections are essential geometric forms that are incorporated into many aspects of modern technology and architecture.

Application of Conic

Section in Real Life

August 22,2017
Circles

ALDAR HEADQUARTERS
is an application of a circle, because of its circular shape. It is the first circular building of its kind in
the Middle east. According to Marwan Zgheib,he decided to create a simple building that would
possess the calm, ideal beauty of classical architecture while also having considerable expressive
power, a building that would compete with the iconic architecture of the UAE and create a sense of
place and identity for the area.

COMPACT DISC
Is another application of a circle. Compact Disc or CD has a circular shape, and circle is the most
reliable shape for CD, because when you put it on a player like DVD it will move around and
smoothly.
CLOCK
The clock has a circular shape both on the inside and out, even though sometimes there are clocks
that are in square shape but still the hand of the clock is rotating around. The gears of the clock are in
the circular form too.

Parabola

PARABOLIC EARS OF ANIMALS

Animals has a paraboloid ears, it helps them to receive sound clearly.
PARABOLIC REFLECTOR
This is another application of a parabola in real life. Photographers use this kind of reflector so they
can have a good lighting as well. Parabolic Reflector expand the range of the light.

AIRPLANE NOSE
The nose of the airplane is in the parabolic shape, it helps reduce wind resistance.
Ellipse

ELLIPSE PARK
This park is made in elliptical shape with a wide space. It is near at the White house in Washington.

FORD LOGO
The logo of this is in the elliptic form. Most of the ellipses can be seen in the different logos.

BATHTUB
This bathtub is in elliptical. The  subtle curves and narrow ends of the bathtub support the back and
hug your shoulders to offer a truly restful bathing experience.
Hyperbola

HOUR GLASS
Is an example of hyperbola in real life. It has a narrow neck and it is used to measure the time.

KOBE PORT TOWER

Is an application of hyperbola. Kobe Port Tower unique structure that has become a symbol of the
port and the city.
LAMPSHADE
The lampshade casts a hyperbolic shadow on the wall.

REFLECTION:

We see conic section every day, sometimes we just don’t notice them. Conic section is
related to my life as a student, because we are studying this kind of lesson, where in we can identify
what kind of conic section is that. If it is circle, parabola, ellipse or hyperbola. In real life, most of the
things here on earth is a conic section, like what are given above. In school, we are using different
things that are in conic section. In some instances when we are using power point or word, we use
different charts, like pie chart which is in circular shape to elaborate some ideas. Another one, when
you are throwing a piece of paper through trash can it is the parabolic form, where in the path of the
piece paper is parabola. As a daughter conic section is related to my life too. When I was a little, I like
to play toys, some of them are circular like hula-hoop, some are parabola like arrow or bow, and
ellipse like football. Conic section is important to our lives because it is hard without it. If we don’t
have conic section, there are no bridges that we can get through when we want to go somewhere.
Conic section has truly helped mankind.
