ROVACE™ 9900 Vinyl Acrylic Binder

A Conventionally Formulated High Scrub PVA in a Low Odor, Solvent-free System
For Architectural Coating Applications

Regional Product  North America

Availability  Latin America

Description ROVACE™ 9900 Emulsion Polymer represents the new generation of vinyl acrylic binders
for architectural coatings. This unique binder sets a new standard of performance for
architectural paints. ROVACE 9900 Emulsion Polymer does not require the use of
coalescing solvents for film formation and application properties. This new, state of the art
solvent-free PVA demonstrates comparable or even higher scrub resistance than the best of
the high scrub PVAs at various PVC levels and volume solids. The other distinct advantage
is the low odor, both in the form of emulsion and also in finished paint. Excellent pigment
binding allows a wide range of pigment volume concentrations from flat to semigloss with
outstanding properties.

Features  Excellent scrub resistance

 Excellent gloss capability
 Low odor
 Solvent-free capability
 APEO free

Formulating For solvent-free formulations, in addition to the proper choice of the binder, there are
Guidelines two other categories of raw materials.
1. Pigments
 TiO2 (dry grind or slurry)
 Extenders
 Opaque polymers
2. Additives
 Thickeners/rheology modifiers
 Dispersants
 Surfactants
 Defoamers
 Preservatives
TiO2
Type and quality of the paint determine the choice of TiO2. High quality DIY paints
that are formulated below CPVC will require high levels of titanium dioxide (175 lbs to
250 lbs/100 gal of paint). Contractor formulations that are formulated well above CPVC
may contain lower levels of TiO2 (50 lbs to 120 lbs/100 gal of paint).
Extenders
Effective extenders in a high quality interior solvent-free flat paint include calcined clay,
platy talc, and calcium carbonate. Avoid extenders that are high in oil absorption or that are
of fine particle size as they may increase binder demand and have adverse effects on film
formation properties.
Opaque Polymers
ROPAQUE™ Ultra, Ultra E, and Dual Opaque Polymer, due to inherent hiding properties
and low oil absorption, improves washability and provides better wet to dry color matching.
It also provides raw material cost savings. The level of ROPAQUE Ultra, Ultra E, and Dual
Opaque Polymer depends on the type of the paint:
 Semi-gloss: 4.0 to 6.0 gal per 100 gal of paint
 Satin: 5.0 to 7.0 gal per 100 gal of paint
 Flat: 7.0 to 10.0 gal per 100 gal of paint
Thickeners/Rheology Modifiers
Both rheology modifiers and cellulosic thickeners can be used with ROVACE™ 9900
Emulsion Polymer. This booklet contains separate starting point formulations with
cellulosic thickeners as well as with rheology modifiers. In the sections titled
"Comparative Performance Properties" you can see the performance of formulations
containing the new state of the art DESIGNED RHEOLOGY™ Thickener versus
cellulosic thickeners.
Dispersants
Polymeric dispersants, such as TAMOL™ products, provide better long term dispersion
stability in comparison to small molecule dispersants. Our starting point formulations in this
booklet all contain TAMOL 1254 Dispersant, which is an economical and versatile pigment
dispersant for flat through gloss vinyl acrylic paints. TAMOL 1254 Dispersant is low foaming
with good color acceptance properties. Nonionic surfactants such as TRITON™ CF-10 can
also be used at low levels as a co-dispersant to improve paint stability, reduce surface
tension and improve color acceptance properties.

Formulating Surfactants
Guidelines In addition to providing good pigment wetting, color acceptance, and substrate wetting,
(Continued) surfactants can play a very important role in freeze-thaw stability. Please refer to the section
titled "How To Formulate For Freeze-Thaw Stability" to obtain detailed information in that
regard. High levels of surfactants can cause foaming and can lower the scrub resistance
properties of the paint. Therefore the choice and the level of surfactants are very important.
Defoamers
Non-silicone defoamers can be used up to a level of 0.75 gal per 100 gal of paint.
Small amounts of silicone defoamers during pigment dispersion can enhance
defoaming efficiency.
Preservatives
KATHON™ LX 1.5% Microbiocide is an excellent choice. However, the order of addition
is very important. It should be added to the grind before the addition of pigments and while
the pH is below 9.0. The recommended level is 0.1 to 0.2 gal per 100 gal of paint.

How to Formulate Specific formulating guidelines have been developed to help achieve freeze-thaw stability.
for Freeze-Thaw There are three important factors in achieving freeze-thaw stability:
Stability  pH
 Ethylene glycol or Propylene glycol (40 to 50 lbs per 100 gal of paint)
 Proper choice of surfactant
Increasing the pH of the paint to 9.0 is very important in obtaining freeze-thaw stability.

How to Formulate Glycol addition is the second important factor in obtaining freeze-thaw stability. Ethylene
for Freeze-Thaw glycol and propylene glycol are water miscible solvents which, upon incorporation,
Stability partition in the water phase and as a result contribute to the freeze-thaw stability of the
(Continued) paint. However, it is important to note that neither ethylene nor propylene glycol by itself
will provide freeze-thaw stability. It is only in conjunction with a pH of 9.0 and proper
surfactant that freeze-thaw stability is achieved.
The other important factor is the choice of surfactant. After screening several surfactants,
Rhodafac RS-410 of Rhodia Inc., an anionic surfactant (phosphate ester), proved to be
effective in obtaining freeze-thaw stability. A level of 2.5 lbs of Rhodafac RS-410 per
100 gallons of paint is recommended. Similar products from other manufacturers may
work as well, but have not been evaluated in our laboratory.
These three factors have been optimized to achieve freeze-thaw stability in all formulations
with "FT" designation.
