Jeremiah spent a significant amount of time at the water exploration table during a kindergarten field trip to a science centre. He played with toys like a squeeze dolphin, fishing rod, and boats. Jeremiah was excited when a boat started moving in the water, pointing it out to his peers. He appeared to play cooperatively with others at the water table. The observer noted that Jeremiah demonstrated communication skills like describing what was happening and conversing with peers. Adding more objects in the water for Jeremiah to grab with the fishing rod could help develop his fine motor and cognitive skills further.

Jeremiah and his Water Exploration!

Observer: Amanda De Jesus — Date: November 30, 2019 — Location: Kindergarten Trip to Science Centre
Communication

Jeremiah (pictured above - third child) is part of the kindergarten class that went to a science centre for a eld trip (Fenning
& Wylie, 2016). Jeremiah appears to be interested in spending a signi cant amount of time at the water exploration table
(Fenning & Wylie, 2016). He plays with several toys such as the squeeze dolphin, shing rod, and the boats (Fenning & Wylie,
2016). At one point during the water exploration, Jeremiah appears to be very excited when he says to his peers “hey look the
boat is going!” while appearing to be hopping (Fenning & Wylie, 2016). While looking at the boat, he appears to be playing
with others cooperatively (Fenning & Wylie, 2016). Jeremiah appears to be very interested in this experience at the water
table by spending a lot of his time there. According to the ELECT document, Jeremiah appears to be displaying his strength in
the communication domain. By using 3.1 Using Verbal Communication, saying to his peers “hey look the boat is going,” he
demonstrated that he is able to engage in complex interactions by observing what is happening, while stating what is
happening at the same time  (OMEd, 2014). By communicating with his peers, he is also displaying 3.4 Conversing with Peers
by speaking in front of his group of peers (OMEd, 2014). He is also able to use the skill 3.5 Using Descriptive Language to
Explain, Explore, and Extend by using a sentence to describe the event that the boat is moving in the water table (OMEd,
2014).

There are several opportunities that can be added to enhance Jeremiah’s development. I as the the ECE
could have incorporated multiple children by creating a sailboat race to enhance his social skills in 1.3 Peer Group
Entry Skills (OMEd, 2014). As an ECE, I could have asked “what are you doing with the shing rod?” and that could
have assisted his emotional development for 2.1 Self Concept (OMEd, 2014). Based on my interpretation seeing
that Jeremiah showed interest in using the shing rod, in the future I will add several objects in the water for
Jeremiah to grab with the shing rod. This will allow him to enhance his 5.3 Fine Motor Skills in the physical
domain, and using his cognitive skills to gure out how to manipulate the shing rod to grab the objects to
