a. Convert 12500 l/s into m3/s.
b. Write down the basis of calculation for the following problems.
(a) How many grams of carbon are present in 264 g of CO2?

(b) What is the weight fraction of oxygen if air mixture contains 50% nitrogen
and 50 % oxygen by weight?
c. Define limiting agent with an example.
d. Define Raoult's law and write its formula.

a. Calculate the molecular weight of NaHCO3, CaCl2,FeSO4,NH4Cl, H2SO4

b. An aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide is prepared by dissolving 25 kg of


sodium hydroxide in 100 kg of water.
Determine (a) Weight % composition of solution
(b) Mole % composition of solution.

c. Derive the relationship between partial pressure and total pressure.


d. It is desired to have a mixed acid containing 40% HNO3, 43% H2SO4 and 17% H2O
by weight. Sulphuric acid of 98 % by weight is readily available.
Calculate (a) Strength of nitric acid
(b) Weight ratio of sulphuric acid to nitric acid
e. A solution containing 55% benzene(C6H6), 28% toluene(C6H5CH3), 17% xylene(
C6H4(CH3)2 by weight is in contact with its vapour at 373 K. Calculate the total
pressure and molar composition of the liquid and vapour.
Data: Vapour pressure data at 373 K
Benzene = 178.60 kPa, Toulene= 74.60 kPa, Xylene=28 kPa

f. Calculate the following for the reaction:
C2H4 +2Cl2 C2HCl3 + H2 +HCl
(a) The stoichiometric ratio of Cl2 to C2H4.
(b) If 4 kmol Cl2 are used per kmol C2H4, find percent excess Cl2.
(c) The amount of HCl produced from 50 kg of C2H4 assuming reaction goes to
completion.
g An evaporator system concentrating a weak liquor from 5% to 50% solids
handles 100 kg of solids per hour. If the same system is to concentrate a weak
liquor from 4% to 35%, find the capacity of the system in terms of solids that can
be handled per hour assuming water evaporation capacity to be same in both

the cases.
3 Write down the overall material balance, solute balance and solvent balance 10
equations for extraction, distillation, evaporation, mixing with block diagram.

5 I. Methane gas is heated from 303 K to 523 K at atmospheric pressure. Calculate 5

6 I. Write down the formula for weight percent, volume percent, mole percent, 5
mole fraction and weight fraction.
II. A mixture of methane and ethane is prepared by adding 100 kg of ethane in 400 5

7 I. A compound having molecular weight 60 has the following percentages of the 5
elements: C= 20%, O2= 26.66%, N2= 46.66% and rest is hydrogen. Find out the
empirical formula of the compound and probable name of the compound.
II. In the manufacturing reaction of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen 5
N2+ 3H22NH3
Find out the limiting agent for the given conditions.
1.Feed mixture has a composition of Nitrogen=60 kmol, Hydrogen= 200 kmol
2.Product mixture has a composition of Nitrogen=10 kmol, Hydrogen= 20 kmol
and ammonia= 20 kmol
