SEMESTER 1 SESI 2020/2021

1. A uniform thin rod, AB shown in Figure 1, has a mass of m at point B. The rod is hinged at A
and is maintained in the horizontal position by a spring of stiffness K. The mass B is supported
by a damper with the damping coefficient is C. Find the damped natural frequency of oscillation
in term of m, K and C when a=(1/3)b, using equivalent method.

2. Find the damped frequency of oscillations of the system in Figure 2. Mass of ABDE structure is 2.5
kg with radius of gyration of 50 mm about D. Consider the pendulum effect. The amplitude was
reduced to ½ after three complete oscillations. Find C, Cc and damped natural frequency.

3. A vibrating system consists of a mass of 50 kg, a spring with a stiffness of 30 kN/m and a damper.
The damping provided is only 20% of the critical value. Determine the :
(a) Damping factor (ratio)
(b) Critical damping coefficient = critical damping constant
(c) Natural frequency of damped vibrations
(d) Logarithmic decrement
(e) Ratio of two consecutive amplitudes.
[Ans : 0.2, 2.45 N/mm/s, 24 rad/s, 1.28, 3.6]

4. Determine the time in which the mass in a damped vibrating system would settle down to 1/50 th of
its initial deflection for the following data :
M = 200 kg, ζ = 0.22, s=40 N/mm
Aso, find the number of oscillations completed to reach this value of deflection.
[Ans : 1.26 s, 2.76]
5. The frame shown in Figure 5, has a uniform AD body (I = 1/3 ml2) and has a mass of 2 kg. The
mass of M1 at the end of AD is 1 kg, the mass of the EB arm is 1 kg and also carries the mass of M2 of
1 kg. The springs have a constant of 1 kN / m and the damper C has a damping coefficient of 8 Ns / m.
using Energy method & Newton method, determine:
a) Frequency of non-damping , ωn
b) Damping ratio

[Ans : 15.34 rad/s, 0.138]
