Bored pile
I. INTRODUCTION
Sonic testing is intended to give information regarding pile lengths, continuity and concrete quality. It
is able to locate defects in piles with regard to depth, character and severity, but does not address
the question of pile capacity
II. BASIC OF PREPARATION
The report on sonic tests is prepared on the following basics:
Technical requirements, documents and drawings provided by the Employer;
Test data recorded at site;
ASTM D6760‐08: Bored pile – Integrity Testing of Concrete Deep Foundations by
Ultrasonic Cross Hole Testing”.
III. TEST PRINCIPLE
This test method cover procedure for checking the homogeneity of concrete in deep
foundation such as bored pile, drilled shafts, concrete piles or auger cast piles. This method
can also be extended to diaphragm walls, barrettes, dams etc.
This method is used to determine the concrete bored pile is followed the principle of optical
rules such as reflection, refraction and diffraction. When supersonic wave propagating in
concrete meets a zone with changes in material characteristics (density, structures), a part of
the wave is reflected at the changes, the other propagates around the perimeter of the
defects resulted in longer travel time (t), less velocity (V). In case the defects are holes filled
with air, reflection and dispersion which magnitudes depending on the size of holes. Based on

the shape of supersonic wave displayed on the screen, concrete quality can be evaluated. The
supersonic wave reflects the elasticity characteristics of concrete while the changes in
amplitude wave reflect the concrete integrity.
Based on the above principles, the bored pile concrete quality is evaluated on the velocity and
waterfall of each profile between a pair of sonic tubes pre‐installed in the Barret. During
testing, the transmitter in one tube sends a high frequency signal that is received by the
receiver in another tube (see Fig. 1). The special monitor records and storages energy and
transmitting time of signals along entire shaft when pulling at the same time transmitter and
receiver at regular depth intervals. The above signals are appeared on monitor screen. The
test is then repeated for each pair of sonic tubes.

IV. TEST EQUIPMENT
The sonic test has been carried out by the Cross Hole Ultrasonic Monitor (CHA) made in Usa. They
have the following parts:
Transmitter
Receiver
Signal cable of 100 m long
Depth encoder
Main monitor
Computer
Special software

V. TEST PROCEDURE
5.1. Preparation works
Before testing, the following works were carried out:
Cleaning, checking straight of sonic tubes;
Clean water
Bore Pile
Checking and recording the actual length, elevation of tube top, distance between tubes;
Filling up water into sonic tubes;
Connecting equipment and equipment testing.
5.2. Testing
The test has been carried out as follows:
Inputting necessary parameters (Project name, bored pile name, length, distances
between tubes…);
Lowering two probes (transmitter and receiver) into sonic tubes until bottom of tubes,
adjusting them so that they are at the same level;

Pulling at the same time two probes with constant speed about 250 ‐ 300 mm/s up to top
of tubes. The signal of sonic wave and water‐flow are recorded, stored by main monitor
and appeared on screen;
Repeating the same procedures for other pair tubes.

5.3. Data interpretation and analysis
Test data has been interpreted and analyzed by special soft ware. The test results are presented n
two types of curves:
Supersonic wave velocity curves;
Waterfall graphs.
Fuzzy Tomography.

VII. ANALYZING
Sonic results have been presented in form of times that take the supersonic wave propagate
through every section along the bored pile shank. Red pile quality has been assessed based on
the following graph and characteristics:

VIII. ASTM D6760‐08 “INTERGRITY TESTING OF CONCRETE DEEP FOUNDATION
BY ULTRASONIC CROSSHOLE TESTING
ASTM D6760‐08 is applied for integrity evaluation.
Velocity is not less than 3000m/s, the integrity of this area concrete accepted.
The serious defect found if the velocity reduction is above 20%. Less than this figure
it is slightly defect.
On the waterfall, the reduction of waterfall shows defective degree of the pile
(showed at the degree of blank on the waterfall). The integrity of the pile is
accepted should waterfall diagram shows stable and homogenous.
The average velocity in concrete as below:

IX. REPORT
A final report for each testing stage shall be presented not later than three working days after
completion of that stage. The report shall consist of a printout of the original output, as well a
summary table including, for every pile tested, the depth and the engineers' interpretation
regarding its integrity.
X. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
From the test results, the following conclusions can be conducted:
The average velocity in concrete of test reached in the range.
Within the scope of the test, no defect has been found or not found. Integrity of
the test is accepted or not accepted.
