The objective function for linear regression, known as the cost function, is minimized during gradient descent by simultaneously updating the parameters. For regression problems, the error is calculated as the sum of squared distances between actual and predicted values. Overfitting occurs when the cross validation error is much higher than the training error due to the model fitting noise in the training data.
