Rock Cycle Lesson Plan-4
Rock Cycle Lesson Plan-4
Rock Cycle Lesson Plan-4
● Standard - 3.3.10.A1- Describe the rock cycle and the processes that are
responsible for the formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.
Learning Targets/Objectives:
● The third grade students will be able to list the three processes of the rock cycle.
● The third grade students will be able to restate what igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rocks are, look like, and how they’re made.
● The third grade students will be able to name/draw the steps of the rock cycle through
the guided worksheet that goes along with the model.
Subject Matter/Content:
rock cycle
Prerequisites:
● an understanding of labeling
● able to work in groups
● basic knowledge of the rock cycle
● igneous rocks
● metamorphic rocks
● sedimentary rocks
● an understanding that the rock cycle can work any direction
Key Vocabulary:
● Rock cycle: sequence of processes that change rocks over long periods of time.
● metamorphic rock: rock that has changed from another type of rock through high
temperature and pressure.
● igneous rock: rocks that form when melted rock cools and hardens.
● sedimentary rock: Rocks that form from sediment.
● weathering: breaking down of rock on Earth’s surface into smaller pieces.
● erosion: process of moving sediment.
Content/Facts:
● What the rock cycle is
-has 3 steps that are interchangeable and can be repeated over and over
- can be changed through melting/cooling, broken down and carried by water wind and
ice, and pressure/heat
-sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks
● Igneous rocks: most common rock in Earth’s crust, made from intense heat such as
magma
● Examples of igneous rocks:
-basalt
-granite
-diorite
● Sedimentary rocks: common on Earth’s surface, layers of sediment that falls to the
surface and piles into layers that get pressed together
● Examples of sedimentary rocks:
-sandstone
-shale
-conglomerate
● Metamorphic rocks: when a rock is changed from another type of rock through high
temperature and pressure
● Examples of metamorphic rocks:
-granite becomes gneiss
-limestone becomes marble
-shale becomes slate
● Sediment: pieces of broken down rock carried by wind, water, or ice
-through weathering and erosion
-break down into soil, sand, and clay
● Weathered rock
-sediment makes up 50% of soil
Student X has an emotional disturbance and needs positive reinforcement. When the student
completes the inquiry for the day, if they did well they will receive a tally on their chart. Their
tallys add up at the end of each week that they are able to cash in for a prize. They also need
support with organizations. I will put in the worksheets for each day in their notebook so they
will not lose it. On the front cover of their notebook also contains the schedule of their day. I
will be sure to also give time warnings.
