in rituals and worships, weddings, works, courtships, festive occasions and lullabies.
Palawan music is characterized by the imitation of sounds from nature and the
environment. It is also highly influenced by the native language of the province.

Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and the Visayas

Background Information for Learners

Please Practice Personal Hygiene at all times. 22

The music from the highlands of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan, and the Visayas, where
several ethno-linguistic groups in the mountains live, is composed of the Vocal and Instrumental
music.
In the highlands of Luzon, music is related to different occasions such as the cycle of
events, occupational activities and various rites and rituals. During the agricultural cycle, peace
pacts courtship, marriage and death rites, musical performances can be witnessed being performed
by the people.
Similar to the Cordilleran music, the music of Mindoro is used for communication with the
spirits in ritual and worships, weddings, works, courtship, festive, and lullabies. Whereas, Palawan
music is characterized by the imitation of sounds from nature and the environment. It is also highly
influenced by the native language of the province.
Visayan music is of highly Spanish influence because of the long colonization of the area.
The Spanish incuturated their culture and religion from Western practice. Spaniard musicians
introduced new styles of music, which also has Western and European musical traditions.
Vocal music is a genre of music performed by one or more singers, with or without
instrumental accompaniment. The singing provides the main focus of the piece. Music which
employs singing but does not feature it prominently is generally considered instrumental music as
is music without singing.
Some examples of Vocal music from the highlands of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan, and
the Visayas are the following:

CORDILLERA
• Ibaloi Badiw is a style of singing without prior preparation or practice in the leader chorus
form.
• Owiwi (Kalinga) are lullabies
• Dagdagay (Kalinga) are infancy-related songs
• Oppia (Kalinga) are infancy-related songs
• Langan bata-bata (Tausug) are infancy-related songs
• Bua (Subannen) are infancy-related songs
• Kawayanna (Kalinga) are infancy-related songs
• Hudhud (Ifugao) is a chanted epic poetry recited and chanted only during four occasions:
the harvesting of rice and the wedding, the funeral wakes, and the bone-washing (bogwa)
rituals. It comprises over 200 stories of about 40 episodes each. Themes are about
celebrations of the Ifugao heroes, heroine, wealth, and culture.

MINDORO
• Marayaw is a song that is used to communicate with spirits in rituals for healing the sick
and protecting the community.
• Pamuybuyen is all about a legend
• Ambahan is composed of a seven-syllable line ending in rhymes

PALAWAN
• Kulial is a lyrical poem expressing love

Please Practice Personal Hygiene at all times. 23

• Tultul is a chanted vocal music about epic heroes and usually chanted at night, ending at
daybreak.

VISAYAS
• Matud Nil is a Visayan love song
• Rosas Pandan is a Visayan courting song
• Condansoy is a Visayan drinking song
• Ilo Nga bata is a children’s song
• Dandansoy is an Ilonggo farewell song
• Ili- Ili Tulog Anay is an Ilonggo lullaby
• Ako Kini si Angi is a Visayan work song
• Si Pelimon is a Visayan work song
