Music from the highlands of Luzon is found to be unique in nature and characteristics.
People from these areas mostly pattered their music and their melodic contour in a nature where
they live in. They also practice their unique traditional belief, by relating to different occasions
such as life cycles. How they live their life like mostly agriculture, and the unique musical façade
during death rites.
Music of the cordillera has been categorized in various ways. It is Vocal, Instrumentals,
and combination of the two. It has also a unique characteristic because it accidentally followed the
pattern of musical notation called NEUMES which sung in only one syllable and is free in meter.
The neumes is a type of musical meter without time signature and this can be found in the
characteristic of music of the Cordillera. The other characteristics is MELISMATIC a type of vocal
passages with one syllable and sung against several note passages.
In this activity you will learn to appreciate the different vocal forms of the music of the
high lands of Luzon. The lesson is intended to introduce to you and describe the characteristics of
the different vocal music from the high lands after identifying them.
Directions/Instructions:
You will listen to the music entitled Salidummay, Oggayam, Hudhud, Gangsa ensemble
and Bamboo solo/ ensemble After listening you will be identifying the characteristics of this music
using the guide statements below entitled “Tell me your name”.
• My name is Gangsa Palook one of my characteristics in order for you to hear my sound is
to struck or beaten with a wooden mallet.
• My name is Gangsa Toppaya my characteristic is to trike your palm while I was rested on
your palm and you will hear my sound.
Procedures:
Listen from both representative vocal music and instrumental music of Cordillera: Salidummay,
Oggayam, Hudhud ,Gangsa ensemble and Bamboo solo/ ensemble. After listening, write in the
numbers 1, 2, 3 the different vocal music of the highlands and in the numbers 4 and 5 write the
instrumental music of the highlands place it in the table provided below together with their
characteristics.

Imitate how people from the high land sing their vocal music or how they played their

The music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and Visayas are composed of Vocal and
Instrumental music, which vary from province to province.
The function of instrumental music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan, and Visayas are
similar to their vocal music. Their instrumental music shows a rich diversity in musical culture of
their regions. The instruments are played and used during ceremonies, a form of communication
with the spirits during rituals and worship, weddings, works, courtships, festive occasions, and
even lullabies. They also imitate the sounds from nature and the environment.
Their musical instruments, which are used to accompany songs and dances, on the other
hand, have been used for various purposes.
These musical instruments are divided into the following categories: Chordophones,
Membranophones, Idiophones, Electrophones, and Aerophones.

Palawan music, characterized by imitation of sounds from nature and the environment, is
also highly influenced by the native language of the province.
On the other hand, the music from the Visayas is generally viewed as influenced by the
Spanish and European music with its prominent use of the guitar and its vocal/choral and
instrument. The musical instruments of the Cordilleras, Mindoro, Palawan, and Visayas have each
their own different distinct characteristics.
The music of the Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and Visayas have similarities in terms of
their functions in the daily lives of the people.
Directions/Instructions:
Based on the lesson learned from the different musical characteristics of both the
instrument and vocal music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and Visayas, accomplish the
activities below.
Procedures:
Activity No.1 Feel the Beat:
Salidomay is a welcome song from Cordillera. Look for any available materials at home
such as empty bottles (Glass/Platic), Spoon, Fork, Stick, etc. Using any of these available
materials, play the tune of the given song. Record and submit your output. Ask somebody at home
to take a video record of your performance. Your output will be evaluated based on the given
criteria below.
The musical instruments of Mindoro are used during festivals, rituals, courtship and daily
activities of the Mangyans. Kalutang is one of these musical instruments. It is a pair of equal-sized
wood struck together.
For your output, look for a pair of equal-sized wood around your house. Make/Produce a
simple rhythmic composition using the given materials as an accompaniment to the tune of
“Manang Biday Song”.
Practice, record and submit your final performance. Ask your parent or any member of the
family to take a video of your presentation. Use the criteria given in activity no. 1 as your basis for
the evaluation of your output.
Using the different improvised musical instruments at home, choose one folksong from
any of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and Visayas. Practice singing this song and perform it with
your family members, with your available improvised instruments as accompaniment. Record and
submit the video of your presentation. Use the criteria given in activity no. 1 as your basis for the
evaluation of your output.

• Ibaloi Badiw is a style of singing without prior preparation or practice in the leader chorus
form.

This activity is intended for the students to create a variety of artistic performances based
from the music of CORDILLERA, MINDORO, PALAWAN, and the VISAYAS. The students
are free to choose any of the songs from the area given above and create their own performance.
Directions/Instructions:
You will choose one song from any of the music of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan, and
Visayas that you know and sing it. If you do not know of any song from these regions, you can
search from Youtube. To those who have no gadgets, ask from your neighbors to help you. Of the
song that you have chosen, make rhythmic patterns (through improvisation) using numbers and
slash. (Numbers represent counting or beat and slashes represent rest.)
Procedure:
• For those who have gadgets, practice singing your chosen song and at the same time
applying the improvised rhythmic pattern. Don’t forget to record it in audio/video
mode.
• For those who do not have gadgets, write the song of your choice in a clean sheet of
bond paper or pad paper. Above the lyrics write the rhythmic pattern.
