Basic algebraic preliminaries

1.1 Introduction
In this chapter, some of the most important mathematical relations
on basic operations and mathematical manipulations are presented. This
chapter is very important to gather the required background for this
course and the proceeding courses.

1.2 First degree equations in one variable

In this section, we will solve the first-degree equations on the form
3 x − 8 = 20 − 4 x ,

where, all the required is to find the value of the unknown variable x
through a serious of mathematical manipulations.

Dr. Omar M. Sallah 2

Chapter 1 Business Mathematics Basic algebraic preliminaries
Math 121 Algebra and calculus

Steps of solution:
1- Rearrange the equation such that the variables are in one side while
all the numbers are on the other side.
3x − 8 = 20 − 4 x  3x + 4 x = 20 + 8

2- Finish the addition process.

7 x = 28

3- Divide both sides on the unknown's coefficient if exist.

x = 28 / 7  x=4

Solution

1) x − 5 = 2 x − 8

1.3 Quadratic equations (Second-degree equations)

This section is for the solution of the second-degree equations

where the unknown variable appears in the equation-squared i.e.
a x2 + b x + c = 0 ,

here the solution is very simple and will be given by the law:
− b  b 2 − 4a c
x1, 2 =
2a

The solution contains two roots i.e.

− b + b 2 − 4a c − b − b 2 − 4a c
x1 = , x2 =
2a 2a

Remarking, that depending on the sign of the discernment the solution

will be identified:-

Two distinct real roots Two equal roots No real roots

b2 − 4 a c  0 b2 − 4 a c = 0 b2 − 4 a c  0

Dr. Omar M. Sallah 8

Chapter 1 Business Mathematics Basic algebraic preliminaries
Math 121 Algebra and calculus

Steps of solution:
1- write the equation on the form a x 2 + b x + c = 0

2- determine the various values of a, b, c

− b  b 2 − 4a c
3- substitute into the solution form x1, 2 =
2a

- Solve the following second-degree equations:-

1) x 2 + 3 x + 2 = 0 2) 3 x 2 − 2 x + 5 = 0 3) x 2 + 10 x + 25 = 0

4) x 2 + 3 x − 4 = 0 5) t 2 − 2t = 8 6) 5 r 2 = 3 − 2r

7) x 2 − 16 = 0 8)- x 2 + x + 10 = 0 9) x2 + 3 x + 4 = 0

1.4 Inequalities
This is a very important section, as it will be needed in many
mathematical processes. The treatment of this part is the same as the
first-degree equations but with two differences,
1- The first is when we multiply the inequality by negative or divide
by a negative value, the inequality sign will change.

2- Also, if we have to get the reciprocal of the two sides the

inequality sign will change.
