My First Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan

Students: 20 children most all reading on or above grade level with 2 ESL students

Time: 1 hour

Materials: -zip lock bag with persuasive writing prompt inside , two pieces of paper and pencil
with an eraser.
Concepts and skills:
LAFS.4.W.2.4 : Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization
are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Standards-based objectives :
-Students will use the “prompt bags” given to implement key topics into a free writing paper that
they create to covey their message for their audience.
-Students will write a persuasive essay that uses the themed topics to display their knowledge of
task, purpose and audience.

Open: (Time:20 min)


1. Review previous knowledge on persuasive essays
2. Go over together an example of a persuasive essay
3. Explain the purpose, task and audience definitions and how they relate to persuasive essays
4. State the objectives for that day and how they will be incorporated into the assignment
5. Present and review a rubric and instructions for writing assignment

Body : (Time:20 min)


1. Present the prompt bags where inside include a persuasive essay topics on what to include in
their persuasive essay.
2. Their essay must include purpose: to persuade, task: to include the topics listed in the prompt
bags, and audience: appealing to audience to persuade them into what you claim.
3. Students will receive 20 minutes to write an introductory one paragraph and conclusion
essay to covey their ideas.

Close: (Time:20 min)
1. Give an opportunity for sharing on the overhead so that we can go over some examples.
2. Point out what students who shared did correctly and how that related to what our objective
goal was for the day.
3. Hand out an exit slip to language arts block time and have everyone turn it into the inbox.
The exit slip will consist of a list of writing tools: task, purpose and audience and the student
will fill into the list how they implemented this into their essay.

Assessment:
Students include writing tools such as task, purpose and audience in their writing referring to
what they learned about persuasive essays.

Differentiation
-ESL Students: I would make sure that the student brought the assignment with him to his
bilingual education teacher and explained it to them as well broke down the instructions so that
they could have a better understanding with that teacher.

-Specific Learning Disability: I would give them more writing time and plan out their essay with
them in a one on one chat to make sure they are on the right page.

-Gifted: I would have my gifted students complete a five paragraph essay with three body
paragraphs instead of one as well as complete an informative essay on the same topic.
