User workspace management
§  UWM provides a central page through which you’re able manage user accounts, quotas and VM images
§  Point a web-browser to http://<IP address of your VIRL Server> and log in as ‘uwmadmin/password’
§  You will be placed in the ‘user’ mode, relating to the user ‘uwadmin’
§  Change modes to ‘Admin’ mode by clicking ‘Admin’ under the ‘Switch Mode’ section

User workspace management
§  Bar shows that you are in Admin mode
§  Current system usage stats are shown here for
all active simulations
§  Use ‘Projects’ to manage resource
quota allocations
§  Use ‘Users’ to manage accounts
§  Use ‘Images’ to add/remove VM images from
the system
§  Use ‘Flavors’ for flavor management
§  Use ‘Subtypes’ for defining and managing
node types
§  Use ‘Openstack’ or ‘VM Control’ for simulation
Troubleshooting
§  Licenses can be ignored in the VIRL system

User workspace management - Projects §  Select an existing project and an associated
action, or press ‘Add’ to create a new project
§  A ‘Project’ represents a set of resources that is available for a user
§  A default project user account is created for each project
§  Additional users can be assigned to a project if required
§  Deleting a user account does not delete the project
§  Deleting a project deletes the associated default user
§  Non-default user accounts are not deleted

User workspace management – Projects & Users
§  Fill in the fields as per the dialog
§  The Instance quota is the maximum number of VMs
that can be active within the project
§  RAM is the maximum RAM that can be consumed
by VMs running in the project
§  VCPUs is the maximum number of virtual cores
consumed by the VMs running in the project

NOTE: -
§  A default project user account is created for each
project
§  Additional users can be assigned to a project if
required
§  Deleting a user account does not delete the project
§  Deleting a project deletes the associated default
user
§  Non-default user accounts are not deleted

User workspace management – Projects & Users
§  By default a user account is created with the same
name as the Project (test3 in this example)
§  The account password defaults to the same as the
user-name (test3 in this example)
§  You can change the password at account creation
time or use the Users management option to change
it later

currently registered images
§  NOTE – image listed under project
‘admin’ or ‘uwmadmin’ mode are
available for ALL users.
§  Image can be loaded for a particular
project/user if necessary
§  Interface allows you to add new
image, modify image properties and
delete existing ones

§  A series of images are already

installed as part of the installation
process

User workspace management - Images
§  Complete the field in the dialog
§  The image path is based on the VM or Server that you’re
connected to. If you’re using a path rather than a URL,
then it is the path on the server that you’re referring to
§  If you want to upload from you laptop, use the Image File
option
§  The ‘Properties’ field should not need anything added to it
§  The ‘creation’ process can take time depending on the
where the image file is located relative to the VIRL Server,
so please be patient
§  VMDK and QCOW2 image formats are supported
§  As part of the creation process for VMs, a Flavor is also
created, containing information on the CPU and Memory
allocation for the VM
§  Once installed, the image will be available for users to
select for their topology simulation

User workspace management - Subtypes
§  Subtypes define the VM launch parameters for each
different type of virtual machine
§  The VIRL server comes with a range of defined types
already included – these can act as templates for you to
create your own subtypes using the ‘specialize’ option.

§  The menu provides you with access to all of the configurable
parameters that will then be applied to your custom subtype
§  You are able to define the default VM Image and VM Flavor to be
used when a custom subtype VM is to be launched
§  Please use these field values carefully since getting these wrong
may mean that your VM fails to boot!

User workspace management – VM Control
§  The Openstack or VM Control tab provides administrative
controls for the operation of Nodes, Networks and Ports
which come into operation when a simulation is running
§  These controls are meant to be used only if problems
occur and administrative action is required to specifically
control a part of the simulation – in other words – BE
CAREFUL!
§  Network controls allow you to delete a network – it can’t be
started! So this is really for clean-up operations

§  Node controls allow you to stop and start a particular VM

or set of VMs

User workspace management – VM Control
§  Ports view shows the ports between a VM and a particular
network segment. Again, controls here are to terminate
ports, not to start ports, so are intended to clean-up
operations only
