Installing VIRL using Installer ISO

1. Download the .ISO file

The files are LARGE - the OVA and .ISO images are 4GB - The torrent download function is
also available which we encourage you to take advantage of - look at using QBittorrent
(available from http://www.qbittorrent.org/) . Please click and open necessary torrent file for
the image you want to download.

If you are using HTTP-based download, use of a download manager such as iGetter or
DownThemAll is strongly recommended. Typical problem encountered with using a regular
web-browser to download, is that the download halts/times-out part way through the
download.

Please check the md5 checksum of your downloaded file against the values in the hashes file
that accompanies the release.

2. Installing from the .ISO:

If running from the Live CDROM:, no changes are allowed. To start the system:
1. Double-click “virl-install networking”
2. Start VMMaestro from the desktop, log in as user ‘guest’, password ‘guest’

If installing to disk without changes:

1. Double-click “Install VIRL to HDD” - once complete, reboot
2. Double-click “virl-install networking” and reboot
YOU MUST REBOOT BETWEEN STEP 1 AND STEP2, AND ONCE MORE AFTER
STEP 2 (2 times in total)

If installing to disk with networking or system changes:

1. Double-click “Install VIRL to HDD” - once complete, reboot
2. Edit settings.ini sections
3. Double-click “virl-install networking” and reboot
4. Double-click “virl-install changes” and reboot again before use
YOU MUST REBOOT BETWEEN STEP 1 AND STEP2, BETWEEN STEP 3 AND STEP 4
AND ONCE MORE AFTER STEP 4 (3 times in total)

3. If you need to make subsequent changes to the system,

1. Edit settings.ini sections as required

2. Double-click “virl-install networking” and reboot
3. Double-click “virl-install changes” and reboot again before use
YOU MUST REBOOT BETWEEN STEP 2 AND STEP 3 AND AFTER STEP 3

4. Done - use VMMaestro client on the desktop to connect via the eth0 IP address of the VIRL
server.

5. If you see 'Authentication failure' messages during Step 3 above, this is typically caused by
issues relating to NTP and system clock times. This can be resolved as follows:

sudo service ntp stop

sudo ntpdate ntp.esl.cisco.com
sudo service ntp start

Double-click “virl-install changes” and reboot again before use

6. SETTINGS CONFIGURATION -
When editing settings.ini, verify at least the following fields: (when you edit don't forget to
remove the '#' sign from start of line. If no change is required you can leave the lines alone)

1. location region (US or EU, note - APAC is not yet operational)

2. hostname (DO NOT EDIT THIS - THIS MUST REMAIN AS 'virl'!!!)
3. using dhcp on the public port [TRUE|FALSE]
4. public_port
5. Static IP (if not using DHCP)
6. public network (if not using DHCP)
7. public netmask (if not using DHCP)
8. public gateway (if not using DHCP)
9. user list (in the format user:password,user1:password1, etc)
10. ramdisk (yes/no)
