For the concert report, I chose to listen to a concert played by TYWO, because I knew that some
of my fellow music students would be performing. I was also excited to hear what an orchestra
made up of teenagers who took music more seriously would sound like. Something I noticed before
the concert started (and the first thing that caught my attention) was that people were wearing
holiday hats and accessories on top of just dressing up in black shirts and pants. This gave a more
friendly feeling, which was perfect for the theme of the concert. However, the music played by the
ensembles was definitely the best part of the night.

The main group that performed tonight was the Toronto Youth Winds Orchestra. Their style at
this particular concert was festive, as they played mostly holiday songs. An interesting component
was that though they were called a “winds orchestra” there was a number of instruments that
weren’t in the woodwinds category, such as a double bass (Paige Heron), harp (Alaina Seabourne),
bass guitar (Michael Murphy) and a percussion section. Other than TYWO and The Symphonic
Winds, there was also singing, dancing and handbell ringing, which intrigued me because I never
knew there was such thing as an ensemble of bells.

I think that most of the repertoire tonight was played very well. The thing I liked best about the
concert was how it incorporated many different types of artists, from instrumentalists to singers to
dancers. Something that I noticed was that whatever piece they were playing, there was always a
wide range of dynamics, something our school band isn’t always able to do. They always seemed
together with the director and knew what they were doing. During solo parts in an ensemble,
everyone accommodated the soloist by quieting down while the soloist performed, which was also
impressive. The repertoire that I liked best during the concert was Jingle Bells, because instead of
playing the traditional version it sounded very jazzy and interesting. I also liked the guest singer,
Heather Bambrick, for her expressive voice.

This was a good learning experience for me because I rarely get to see professional or semi
professional ensembles perform. It showed me what a really orchestral ensemble should sound like.
I also learned how teamwork can play off of instruments, because everyone followed the director
and did what had to be done to play the music well, and it seemed like an ensemble instead of a
group of soloists sitting together.

TYWO has done a very good job with most of the repertoire, and on top of that created a
friendly atmosphere that not all bands are able to create. In conclusion, I think that the TYWO
holiday concert was prepared and executed very well, and I look forward to any future concerts they
may have.
