Panimula INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF SOUTH ASIA AND MIDDLE EAST
India
1. AVANADDH- Described as membranous percussive instrument. This class of
instrument typically comprise the drums. These are instruments that produce sound
with strike-able membranes, mostly of weathered leather. Tabla, Dholak, Dhol, Daff,
Damroo, Mridangam, Nagada, Pakhawaj, Khol (Mridangam), Nal (Dholki)
etc. are examples of Membranous Percussion Instruments.

1. SUSHIR – Also known as “ blown air “ it is characterized by the use of air to excite
the various resonators.  Bansuri, Harmonium, Shehnai, Nadaswaram, Shankh, Pungi
etc. are examples of Wind Instruments.

1. TAT- Referred to as vina during the old civilization. ( Stringed Instrument). These
instruments are played by plucking or striking the strings. Sitar, Tanpura, Veena,
Vichitra Veena, Saraswati Veena, Ektara, Sarod, Surbahaar, Surmandal, Rebab,
Santoor etc. are examples of Plucked String Instruments.
