I said…

The term "fluid" typically refers only to liquids,

however, here a fluid describes any gas or liquid
that will take up the shape of what is holding it.

Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids

(gases and liquids) at rest and in motion!

What Does The Discipline Of Fluid Mechanics Cover?

• Fluid mechanics can be divided into fluid statics, the study of
fluids at rest; fluid kinematics, the study of fluids in motion; and
fluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion (or
moving fluids). Fluid dynamics is further divided into
hydrodynamics, or the study of water flow, and aerodynamics, the
study of air flow.

• It is a branch of continuum mechanics, a subject which models

matter without using the information that it is made out of atoms,
that is, it models matter from a macroscopic viewpoint rather
than from a microscopic viewpoint.

• Fluid mechanics can be “mathematically complex”! Sometimes it

can best be solved by numerical methods, typically using
computers. A modern discipline, called computational fluid
dynamics (CFD), is devoted to this approach to solving fluid
mechanics problems.

EGB323-Fluid Mechanics Rationale…

• Many engineers have to deal with fluid flows at some stage of their
careers. A substantial number will specialise in aspects of wind,
water, environmental, building services, and machine/systems
engineering, energy, heat and/or mass transfer.

• This unit will address the fundamental principles of fluid

behaviour and apply these principles to the analysis and design of
static, pipe flow and various hydraulic systems.

• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is also introduced at a

basic level to illustrate how it is used to analyse simple engineering
problems.

• This is the foundation unit in fluids and as such is offered in the

second year of study. The material covered in this unit forms a
basis for subsequent fluid dynamics and bio-fluids units. It relies on
a prior knowledge of physics, mathematics and solid mechanics.

Teaching Mode:
EGB323 – Fluid Mechanics
A combination of lectures, tutorials, CFD work and a laboratory experiment with real world
application:
• Fundamental theories and principles will be introduced through Lectures.
• Problem solving tasks to draw out the concepts covered in the lectures will be performed
in Tutorials.
• Laboratory and CFD exercise will enhance the learning experiences in this unit.
Lectures: 2-3 hour lecture every week which will present the fundamental theoretical
principles.
Tutorials: 1-hour tutorial every week which will be comprised of two aspects:
•Application of the theoretical principles introduced in the lectures to solve problems.
•Brief session involving a discussion of a typical application example that relates to a lecture
topic (NOTE: NO TUTORIAL WILL BE HELD IN WEEK 1 (this week), 6 or 7!!!).
Laboratory Experiment (wks 7, 10 and 11): You will perform a laboratory experiment
relevant to a real world context. Each GROUP (4-5) will produce a report summarising
and discussing results and related concepts. Location is O-202!

CFD Project/Report (wks 6, 7, 8, 9): You will perform a CFD group project relevant to
a real world context. Each GROUP write a CFD report on the work performed. Location
is computer lab or collaborative (tutorial) space!

Examples of Fluid Mechanics Applications

(in normal gravity and reduced gravity)

(THE CONTEXT OF FLUID MECHANIC THEORY)

(for illustration purposes ONLY-though theory

will be covered this semester!!!)
What happens to fluids in reduced gravity?
Convection (motion) is suppressed
Buoyancy is suppressed

 In reduced gravity, the suppression of convection and

buoyancy affects:
– Heat and mass transport phenomena
– Metal, crystal, material, nanomaterial formation/synthesis
– Fluid Science, liquid surface tension, boiling (relevant here!)
– Combustion processes, fire safety
– Biomedical functions
– Etc...
 Important to both fundamental and applied research
HUH!!!
What does that mean???

Example: Salad in Space
Mmmm good, now just need
some salad dressing!

TED’S BEST DRESSING:

Mix together olive oil and vinegar (2 liquid phases), spices (1 solid phase),
and shake rapidly (adds bubbles-1 gas phase):

- air bubbles BOO!

- olive oil

- vinegar

- spices

WELL MIXED
YEA!
Apply it to the salad. Well, that is another problem!!!

Some mixing occurs, but not due to gravity

HOW DO WE DESCRIBE THESE SYSTEMS?

The Navier-Stokes equations assume a fluid to be a continuum, whereas in reality a fluid is a collection of
discrete molecules. This continuum assumption holds up remarkably well and, when combined with linear
and angular momentum conservation laws, results in the Navier-Stokes equations:

One-dimension - unsteady

OMG!
SO WHAT DO WE DO?

Theory sometimes
but often use C.F.D.
